Alternative filter sizes for a '99 Grand caravan.

I was changing the oil on my GC and F150 when I discovered I had used all of the Total grip AA16 filters I had for the GC.

Naturally I have a bunch of AA8A filters for the F150, so I doubled checked everything and mounted one up.

Only real change was I needed to add 1/2 quart more oil then normal. I will now keep buying the F150 sized filters so I have less to keep track of and use them for both.

AA16 is = to: Fram PH15, Purelator L14670 and Wix 51085

AA8A is = to: Fram PH8A, Purelator L30001 and Wix 51515

We have a 1998 Chrysler Town & Country with the 3.8L V6. At this very moment there is a Purolator L40017 on it. It is BIG.

The 51085 is a short version of the 51515 (or vice verse, depending upon how you look at it ...). Comparing all the main characteristics, they are identical except for height and beta.

Either will work fine, as long as the extra length of the 51515 will fit. If so, I'd commonize and run the 51515 for both. It has a bit better filtration beta ratio.

The wix are the same on paper but the Purelator and total grips are larger in diameter and length. I wasn't sure it would fit until I took the filter and tried it out myself.

The L40017 is a 2 quart filter

but it will not fit on the F150, just to long. I will stay with the L30001 or AA8A so I can stock 1 less filter size. Another plus is the L30001 size filter is a very common and easy to find.

A Wix 51515 is also the same as a Motorcraft Fl-1A.

I thought the vehicle in question was a '99 Grand Caravan... if so, the L40017 fits, unless something was radically changed between 1998 and 1999.

BTW, here at BITOG, "GC" is generally understood to mean "German Castrol" (0W-30 Syntec), not "Grand Caravan." Given that, I can understand why some posters were thrown off and began discussing the F150... they probably thought you are using GC in your F150.

Let me clarify by GC I meant grand caravan. No castrol in any of my vehicles at the moment but being BITOG you never know.

I don't want to run the larger L40017 filter because it will not fit on the F150. Rather then stock 2 filters like I have been doing I would rather stock 1 and avoid the same situation where I unknowingly use the last filter for either vehicle. Since the F150 filters L30001 are very common it is also very easy to find them at any store.

If I could stock only 1 filter for all my cars and equipment that would be even better, but that is unrealistic so now I have to keep 6 different filters on the shelf instead of 7.

What are the other filters? Maybe they could be futher reduced.

1-mazda5 is the only cartridge
2-the rio uses an eao20
3-the 2 listed already AA8A bought on BOGO
4-my bug uses a Napa gold 1347 I cannot buy the purelator version anymore locally

I think it was L20073
5-john deere uses either JD or purelator same size as the yaris, the part# escapes me at the moment
6-my generator uses a filter even smaller then the JD, I have a bunch of these on the shelf

Probably all the smaller gasket size 3/4-16 thread filter. You could probably reduce your part numbers further. Just see if a the gasket works on your JD stuff (take the gasket out of a AA16/8A and see if it works).

Wow, that really IS a comprehensive study. Unfortunately, it was done 3 years ago, Dave, and things have probably changed, so we'll need you to re-do it.

Actually, I wonder how much really HAS changed?
