Greese is the word will be posting a new and revised filter report soon including the Donaldson syntec and standard version.

Crimsontide,

It depends on whether its a synthetic version of the filter versus cellulose. However, donaldson is one of the very best brands around.

I have started using their syntec version of the fl1a filter. p169071. suppposed to filter down to 7microns nominal, 20 absolute with 14gpm flow.

I cut one apart and its very high build quality.

I can say that at 4000 miles on my oil, this filter has kept the oil looking new. I plan on changing the oil at 7k and doing a uoa.

Using mobil 1 10-30 and mobil 1 filter oil was dirty at 3000 miles. Was never brave enough with that oil to go much beyond 3k.

they are about the same as a mobil 1 filter as to price. I did get lucky and caught a case on ebay for $45 though...

I use the delo synthetic 5w-40.

Where can one find one of these filters? Are they available in common applications?

It's too bad that their Synteq media comes in almost no sizes. 99% of their filters are the regular cellulose.

Amsoil site sponsors, can a person get the "endurance synteq media" oil filters for automotive applications ?

If so can you price them for us. A highly valued oil analysis customer said he saw them at the Amsoil warehouse today in Dallas and was wanting to get a price from you fellas first.

This is from Amsoil...

quote:

Staying on the cutting edge of technology, AMSOIL has expanded its reach in the diesel market. Through a partnership with a leading worldwide manufacturer of filtration systems and replacement parts for mobile and industrial equipment, AMSOIL now offers state-of-the-art Donaldson Endurance™ air and oil filters.

Donaldson Company Inc. (DCI), patent holder of the Endurance Filter technologies, has products that include air and liquid filters for engines, exhaust and emission products, and air intake systems. Donaldson Company technology is unique in the world. DCI’s portfolio is built on three core strengths: leading filtration technologies, solid customer relationships and global presence.

Why would Donaldson partner with AMSOIL?

DCI shares the quality and performance oriented operating philosophy of AMSOIL. AMSOIL operates with a unique and successful business model; multiple channels of distribution, Dealer direct to commercial accounts and Dealer direct to retail on the shelf accounts. DCI also recognizes the reputation AMSOIL has as an industry leader and pace-setter. The successful image and track record of AMSOIL makes it a dynamic and vibrant business partner.

Why would AMSOIL partner with Donaldson?
Donaldson filters dominate heavy-duty diesel rolling stock (class 6, 7 and 8) air and oil filter markets. Donaldson has a reputation for quality and performance. The partnership allows AMSOIL to position itself with more aftermarket filter products that are recognized for outstanding performance in the class 6, 7 and 8 vehicle market.

Depending on geographic market size, it takes the typical stocking retail/distributor a substantial investment and commitment to become a Donaldson filter distributor. Most small to medium retailers don’t have the financing to carry the Donaldson filter line, which includes the state-of-the-art, premium-quality, efficiency-oriented Endurance line. AMSOIL Dealers can sell new and existing Retail On The Shelf accounts any Donaldson Endurance ™ filters they need, without the retailer having to make such a substantial filter investment. AMSOIL Dealers can cater to new and existing commercial account fleets, which otherwise have to seek out and find the closest stocking Donaldson Endurance ™ filter distributor.

coverage is limited to diesels but if the price is right this is a great source for a great filter.

Amsoil guys whats the cost on these filters ?

Donaldson is the leading heavy duty air filter supplier to the Trucking, Bus, and heavy equipment OEM's.

In the beginning Champion made 95% of Donaldson "wet" filters. These were oil, fuel, and coolant filters for trucks and automotive. I think it's down to 50-60% of their product line now.

Donaldson has a plant in Minnesota where they now manufacture their own top selling heavy duty filters. They also use a plant in Mexico to produce some of their "smaller" diameter can sizes.

I suspect that the majority of their automotive offerings are made by Champ besides some of the slower moving heavy duty part numbers. The P16-9071 would either be a Donaldson made product or they supplied the element to Champ to can for them. (Dan4510..does the backplate have AA stamped into it somewhere between the inlet holes?)

Donaldson is getting away from cellulose media and going to synthetic across the board in most of their heavy duty and hydraulic applications according to a Donaldson distributor who is on their dealer council and buys from the company I work for.

Terry-
At the present time, to the best of my knowledge, Donaldson does not have automotive filters with the Endurance filter media--except for one that fits the Cummins diesel.

Will they adapt the material to auto filters in the future? Maybe the Shadow knows! However, it wouldn't surprise me that we might see something within the next year.

Donaldson also has a joint venture facility in Indonesia that produces filters mainly to suit Japanese and Euro applications.
To the best of my knowledge, these all use cellulose media.
As with all manufacturers, they also re-badge other filters such as Baldwin and Mann Hummel for low volume applications. One of the Donaldsons I currently use is made in Germany.

Doug Hilary uses the Donaldson ELF filters on his truck fleet, in concert with Mann centrifuges, and they stay in service for 100 000km.

I've just purchased some P169071 filters, (synthetic media version, or in Donaldson speak "high efficiency" version of the Donaldson P550008 and Motorcraft AFL1) and can definately state they aren't made/assembled by Donaldson.
BTW, all Donaldsons have a date stamp on the box, and these are 03/02, so are 2.5 years old. Things may have changed since these were made.

Donaldson possibly/probably supply the media, but the base plate and centre tube are definately not Donaldson manufactured, with the centre tube having holes, not punched perforations, and the base plate being of conventional design and not the traditional Donaldson inverted base plate arrangement.

Parts counter guys are helpful. I searched the DONALDSON site first, knowing that I wanted the SYNTEQ media P169071 (FL1-A/PH8A Extended Service replacement).
