so is it kind of like the Saturn S Series and there oil filter looking transmission filter design
does this sound like a decent maintenance plan

Because I like them and there isnt a car without issues. Atleast I haven't found one.
Unless you plan on keeping $3000 in the bank for the new transmission on the V6 Accord, don't do it. The Accords that you will be purchasing fall in to the age group where if it is 6-cyl, it will *need* the transmission. And even if you get one with the fixed transmission, the chances are, it will need another one eventually under your ownership. Buy manual and/or 4-cyl and never worry about this problem.

the 98-02 accord v6 auto's and similar vintage odyssey transmissions are garbage. the same transmission with the 4 cylinder can also have issues as well. the later ones are just fine with not many reported issues.
to mitigate it i've read that 30k changes are REQUIRED. your changes should be a 2-3 cycle flush each time. Valvoline maxlife is also allowable, i've done this personally and had success with a 98 accord.

If you're worried about the transmissions, don't get a V6. Also, make sure you check the ATF before buying - if it's anything other than bright pink, RUN.

The 2003-07 4 cylinders are not known to have this problem. By in large the V6's were affected by this, and it was far more prolific on the 2003-04 models. '05 and up V6's seem to pretty good with a much lower failure rate after the fix was implemented. I have a '07 V6 with 76K and it's fine. For piece of mind I drain and fill the trans every 25-30K...which I do on everything I have just to make sure they last. Last time I used the Honda DW-1 fluid and it shifts great after being in there now for 22K. I expect to keep this car until about 130-150K and am confident the trans will last that long. Even when you do hear of failures on the V6's, if you go look at the log book on Drive Accord, they mostly happen well over 100K (usually 120-150K) and on '03-'04 models that had the fix added a couple years after delivery. The reputation that has been spread on the internet is far more sinister than the true record. Even in consumer reports, the '07 V6 has a top rating for transmission indicating no issues. Consumer reports gave the '03 V6, on the other hand, a large black mark. Steer clear of an '03-'04 V6, or just get an I-4 and you'll be fine.

The 4 is definitely putting less power through a trans. I do not think they are the exact same trans. Either way, the data is there to support that I-4's have few if any issues in 7th gens.
