Does Sump Size dictate OCI?

Without oil filter change 4-7/8 qt(US) 4 qt(IMP) 4.6(L) •Viscosity SAE 5w30

Apologies for my poor memory. The 'supposedly' part was related to the fact that I have never had to fill it with the manual's amount.

This engine warms up in less than half the distance traveled when compared to my 2012 335i.

Not a problem.

I remember something about 4 quarts for this engine. I thought I had misremembered when first mentioned.

That said, I think I am understanding the fast warm-up times that the manufacturers are onto, which will also happen faster with thinner oil.

Now as to the BMW M5 driven on a very hot day 100+ degrees on a track? I can only wonder if some 50 or 60-weight oil or better would have helped with that. Track = airflow; pushed hard = increased temp. I always hear that heavy oil is for HOT days and track use of engines that heat up very nicely. And I do not know the sump size of that 400HP V8 with 8 throttle bodies. Opinions?

The VQ3.5DE in my 2005 Altima takes 4.5 quarts according to the manual. However with the oversized filter, I'm only a little over the full line with 5 quarts.

On the opposite end of the spectrum, the 3.6 boxer in my wife's outback takes a full 7 quarts which seems like a lot for a medium sized engine. With that amount of oil I have no problem running it to the factory recommended 7,500 mile OCI.

With respect to sump size, my G takes 4.9 L for an oil and filter change, which is around 5.2 U.S. quarts.

As for your article reference, I've seen that thread and also read a magazine article somewhere (likely C&D) mentioning such issues as well.

@Coprolite: With respect to the Walmart jugs, I have the same experience as you do. When we have rollbacks up here, they use the 4.73 L size, which is 5 U.S. quarts. Using that, I'm right at about the full line, too. I still have an unopened litre of PYB, since I had originally thought I might have to add a tiny bit to stay in the safe zone if I filled with 5 U.S. quarts.

I know I should send a sample out but just give me your best educated guess. This car see's frequent 45 minute stop and go suburban drives to work.

If the car is driven 45 minutes at a strtch, moisture should always be evaporated from the oil
Fuel dilution shouldn't be a problem, unless the thing is always run hard and kept in the richer part of the fuel map.
It isn't so much sump size as power potential that would limit OCI length.
The Versa has a small engine of pretty low specific output, so it probably wouldn't tax its oil very much, even if it only holds four qts.
Having said all of the above, I'd stay with 6 months/7.5K OCIs, unless you're willing to invest in a couple of UOAs with the oil you decide to use.
You could UOA the oil after 7.5K and then go from there.
I'm not sure what you're after, since four qts of oil and a filter every six months is not much of an expense.
The more I read here the less value I place upon UOAs, since while they're fun and informative, the information they really convey is all in the interpretation.

5 quarts, give or take.

My 3.9L has a 4 quart sump and I am very uncomfortable going past 5000mi OCI.

I'll do one UOA when this OCI hits 4000 miles just to check wear, then probably do 5k intervals regardless of what I can get away with. I'd rather not try and stretch out OCI's on a pushrod motor.

My OCI is dictated by the draconian Infiniti warranty. I still faithfully do my 6 month <3750 mile OCI with PU SN. After the first time with PP, I noticed it was slightly over full and went to one jug. The 5w30 PP has done wonders for the fuel economy of my lawn mower since then.
