Does Oreilly Auto recycle a cut open oil filter?

Will they take any filter? I just toss them usually. Is that bad?
That's what I've been doing for over 50 years. I drain them out inverted and sideways as best I can, then put them into a peanut or coffee can, duct tape them up, (so they don't leak in the bag or trash can), and out they go.

My local parts stores won't take them. And I'm not about to burn $100.00 bucks worth of gas trying to find someone who will.

A cut open filter is basically a canister filter element, so I don't see why it would make a difference. You're actually making the disposal job easier and less messy... you're doing them a favor.

Our county has a few sites where they accept household hazardous waste, electronics, and other things you aren't supposed to send to the landfill. It is free for residents so I take my filters (just the filter media portion) there along with used motor oil and whatever else I need to get rid of.

The cans, baseplates, and other metal components get a quick blast with a degreaser and go into the metal recycling bin.

Why wouldn't they recycle a cut open filter? Hell the cartridge type don't even have a can. AZ takes everything on a cart near their register. I walk in drop off and go on my day. ez pz. I'm no environmentalist but no need for oil going into the environment, water, etc.

I took two five gallon buckets of used oil to auto cone to recycle and the guy took the oil but said we only take 5 gallons at a time. I said to him I purchased these ten gallons oil from Autozone in a single transaction.

The oil came from the environment !

I don’t think that’s what he’s saying.

Way to stretch things. Lol
It was pretty obtuse, so who knows ... but it did sound along the lines that it doesn't matter if it's in the envorionment because "it came from the environment".
