I have recently began my weightlifting/cardio routine about a month ago. I used to do it religiously a few years ago, then just off an on since then....

At first it sucked, but now I am feeling the burn, the pain, and the pump. Feels great!

Anyone here do cardio or weightlift to either gain or lose weight, or just to be more fit?

My goal is endurance and strength, (not power) and reduce my body fat % a couple of points to get the 6pack action back.

The worst part is my diet.... Not in the sense I have a bad diet, but a strict one that limits what I may consume.

Anyone else??

I am diabetic, years ago in college, I was an active power-lifter and a tennis player, after graduating, lost the tenis due to work pressure but kept the lifting in a reduced mode, now at 41, I lift weights to stay alive but only at half capacity, I bench around 230kg max.

I work out every week day. I do cardio three days (MWF) and strength training 2 days (TTh). I had been doing it off-and-on after work, but I resolved to get better about it and now I go every day before work. For me, it's much easier to motivate myself to go in the morning when I'm fresh, not when I'm tired after a day at work. My primary issue is my weight. I'm 260 (but I don't look it, seriously), whereas I should be 190 - 200.

Of course, now that I'm in the gym every day, I need to overcome my habit of overeating junk food between dinner time and bed time. Working out in the morning actually helps in that regard, though, since I have to go to bed earlier so I can actually wake up on time. That makes for less time between dinner and bed that I can eat junk food.

I ty to lift weights and do abs 4 or 5 days a week. My brother who was a good high school athlete and now works in the medical field, designed for me a nice 3 day rotation so that I hit the right muscle groups on the right days. I try to walk 30 minutes on the treadmill at least a couple times a week.

I've been weight and cardio training for about 11 years. I like to do it in the afternoon or at night. My body just doesn't like to wake up in the morning.

I do upper-body weight training a couple times a week, preferring free weights where possible with a smooth universal setup for other motions. I do 1 warmup then 3 sets for each exercise, going to failure each time in 8 to 12 reps. On the last set I like to go to failure then keep on dropping weight until I can barely lift anything. People have told me that they get too sore doing this style of workout, but once you get used to it you'll barely even feel it the next day. I can't say it's ideal or anything - I'm no expert and I don't read any of those roid-monkey mags - but I like it and it works OK for the 2-3 hours a week I put in. The most I've ever benched unassisted with free weights is 240lb when I was about 205lb, and I'm about 185lb now, so I'm not doing the big lifting like Gurkha!

Tuesday: Chest -> Shoulders -> Triceps
Thursday: Back -> Biceps -> Forearms

I just do crunches/curls about 3 times a week to do my abs. I also bike and play hockey for cardio. I go pretty hard so I let that take care of legs.

Usually hit the gym monday-thurs for around an hour each day. Get all major body parts and lift lower legs everytime i'm there. Calf muscles do not need days off and you'll see your best gain hitting them every day. I mainly lift to feel good, look good and it's a fun hobby. Not to mention it's a good place to pick up women. I have to admit that during this time of year I usually slack off alot especially with my diet. When spring rolls around i'll get at the abs hardcore again and go back to a good diet.

Just getting back into it after not doing anything for almost 4 months, I try to workout three times a week. I use to do weights and cardio separate but found that I really needed more cardio, so I do both. I try to work up to a comfortable 3 mile jog, sometimes 5, mixing it with stairs or walking up an incline sometimes just doing 10 cal/minute for a 500 to 1000 cal workout. So far I prefer a high impact workout that jogging provides, as long as my knees don't bother me.

I then stretch, paying attention to the hamstrings as if they're limber I find that I don't notice my back as much.

Then it's weights, typically alternating some sort of dead lift in one workout with squats in another, sometimes cleans for fun, followed by chins and overhead presses. Sometimes grip or curls. I use to do more, but keeping it simple seems to work well enough.

Just trying to stay fit, and doing what I can to avoid back problems.

I ride my mountain bike 7-10 miles in the mountains, 2-3 times a week, weather permitting.

I do a couple of mountain bike races per year. My last one, in Oct. '05, was a 24-hour race in Conyers, GA. on the '96 Olympics mountain bike course.

Island Vic,

I suggest you do a martial art like Taekwondo. I lost 20 pounds in three months while gaining alot of strenght.

Heres my schedule:

Monday: Lift wieghts
Tuesday: Taekwondo
Wednesday: Liftweights
Thursday: Taekwondo
Friday: Jog
Saturday: Jog and lift wieghts
Sunday: rest

Im going to buy a bicycle soon and try to use it as much as I can instead of driving.

I used to run 6 miles cross-country every day, work out at the dojo for 2-3 hours 5 nights a week, and ride the bike.
Now I just run, trying to go an hour a day, at least 4 days a week. Need to start the abs program, I'm afraid.
One of the best workouts is to get a heavy bag, maybe 80-110 lbs, tape you're wrists, wear some bag gloves(if you're some kinda girl, that is!) and punch and kick it until you can't lift your arms and legs anymore, take a 1 minute break, do it again, and again, and again.....

I workout every single day, I do 20min on the treadmill in the morning and if the weather isn't super cold, I go for a 20-30min walk on my lunch time at work too.

I haven't been able to go for those walks much in the last few weeks though, with the exception of this week where it's been unseasonably warm here. As a result of my lesser amount of cardio, plus with the extra snacking lately, I've gained about 8 pounds since October. I usually gain in the winter though, and once it warms up outside I lose it again. I'm still in fairly good shape, I'm 170lbs (at 5 foot 8 that is only about 10lbs above my ideal weight)

I agree with Korean_Redneck on the martial arts. I have lost weight and kept it off the last two years doing Jiu-Jitsu thre times a week, and walking for 20-30 minutes a day on the off days. Not eating after 8 PM, drinking alot of water, quitting all sodas(including diet ones) and watching calorie intake all help me keep the weight off. About 5 years ago I weighed 250, now I am 195 - Joe

K-redneck, I'm looking into Aikido.

I don't need to lose weight, just lose body fat and gain muscle mass, which is very hard to do at the same time.

I could stay at my weight now if I had optimal body fat and lean mass.

I am now doing workouts from the Weider Body Building System Book.

It changes the routine every few weeks, and when I am done, I am going to create my own routine.

Right now the only supplements I am taking are creatine, glutamine, protien shakes, multi-vitamins, and a vitamin C w/ B-complex combo.

Plus I bought one of those Swiss Balls. It's about 30" tall and I do ab workouts and use dumbells with it. It's freaking cool.

I want to buy a bike, but torn between a road bike and a trail bike. I want both!

Any comment on supplements?

I glad others here workout also!

We need to post our progress!

You guys reminded me; I was in the best shape of my life from '93-'98, when I was training in TaeKwonDo & full-contact kickboxing. I earned my TKD first degree black belt in '96, but my living arrangements forced me to give up TKD in '98. If you have a good instructor, TKD is definitely some of the best cardio excercise you can get. I don't recommend the full contact kickboxing to anyone, BTW.

You guys are right, martial arts will get you in shape and keep you that way, if you work at it.
I made shodan in Kempo in '86, sandan in 88.

Wayne, what part of North Alabama? My youngest sister lives near Boaz.

I work out 3x a week with weights doing a "circuit" type workout. I started this routine 4 years ago to loose weight, but lost interest after a year as I failed to modify my poor eating habits and the weight didn't come off.

I went back to the drawing board 18 months ago and started the same workout routine. Only this time I followed a realistic diet and the pounds came off and have stayed off. In my case, the exercise was useless without a proper diet.

Weights Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday, jogging Monday, Wednesday and Friday.

Unfortunately, I haven't been able to run much in the last 3 weeks because its rained EVERY SINGLE DAY!!!

When I was in my 20s I was a runner and three times a week did six sets of pushups, six sets of pullups (some behind neck, some chin), and six sets of wrist curls with a 20 lb dumbell. In my 30s I did not do much workout at all. Now I run from the parking to the office (about 3000 feet) and back and several times a week will climb the stairs at work for 400+ steps. I have a rowing machine I should start using ($10 garage sale get), but need to find a place to put it.
