Had a little trouble putting the filter mag back on after a filter change last night and I got to wondering. Usually I am able to just let it snap on in the middle of the filter, well this time it got stuck half way on and I had to slide it back off and try again. Would this have pulled the metal end cap and/or spring thing at the end of the dome out of place? Maybe even tear the pleats from the glue? It's a motorcraft fl820 and the SS model filtermag. I feel like I need to cut one open and experiment. Any opinions on this are greatly appreciated!
Does a Filtermag move the metal end caps inside?

I highly doubt the magnet moved anything inside, but if you are skeptical then cut it open. But just the process of cutting it open might shift things around. I think you would have to very carefully cut just half of the side off so you could peer inside without disturbing the guts. Could be a fun "experiment".
I've been wondering about this too. When I do a oil+filter change I try to snap the Filtermag in the center of the filter without moving it up and down. I've got a couple of defective filters I might try experimenting on.
Yeah that would be great. Have you got some that spin and rattle inside already?

+1 Extremely doubtful the exterior magnet is strong enough to do much other than catch the metal filings.
Tear the pleats from the glue? As the pleats would move in tandem with the end caps/glue, I can't even visualize that scenario. I'd feel confident the leaf or coil spring is significantly stronger than the magnetic force of the filter mag on the exterior of the filter.
I don't use a filtermag, but that extremely unlikely scenario wouldn't be a reason to keep from doing so. My .02

Its the cheaper black ss model. Yeah I really think I'm being too ocd on this. Most likely the leaf spring and glue for the pleats are tougher than I think. Thanks for the replies everybody.
Mr Tcar, I use two industrial strength Filtermag CT3.2's with no problems. The Amsoil EAO36 filter that is no longer available, is robust and unaffected by the Filtermags. Don't worry. the SS series is too mild to cause any trouble for you.
