When I owned GM V8's I did the same. I've heard of rare but actual cases where debris on the road has punctured these filters and destroyed the engine, the only flaw of the location.

That pic illustrates really well why some people can & some people can't. Can't on my car, either- it's horizontal. And from what I know of lubrication under these conditions, I also don't believe it makes any difference whether the filter is prefilled or not.
