Do I need a high milage oil?

I was at Walmart cruising the oil section. I decided to buy Castrol EDGE 5W-30 high mileage because of the apparent extra wear packs.

I have a 2014 Nissan Xterra with the VQ40DE with 80k miles. My OCIs are every 5k usually with mobil 1 filter. Just wondering if theres really any benefit to the " high milage oil" or not. I don't have any leaks, etc. No burning of oil. I've always used regular synthetic 5w30. Figured ehh.. Why not. It can only help.

I switch back and forth between HM and non-HM depending on what is on sale. It won't hurt to use HM but most likely won't provide any benefits, either.

Putting marketing and having more options to fill shelf space with their brand a side I think the intention of a HM oil is more preventative than a fix. Most vehicles today at 75k don't have issues, if their intention was a fix the recommendation would be much higher, like 125k.

That sounds good but not always the case. Obviously the odds of "hurting' something are virtually nil so theres no adverse risk to consider.

Think from the other side- what exactly did (does) it help?

I've been using M1 HM 5/30 in our daughter's Yaris for 3 years with no ill effects. The 1st couple of OCs were rather dark. I suppose that's a testament to it's cleaning ability. We bought it used and I did know exactly what oils had been used in it's 1st 8 years.

It's now 11 years old with 150k on it. Zero oil leaks, zero burning....not even a slight puff of smoke at startup when it's sat for a few days. I've never added any make up oil either. How much of that is the oil and how much of it is a testament to the durability of the 1NZ engine....I guess I can't say.

I'm also getting ready to do an OC on a friend's '13 Camry with 290k miles on it. It's used M1 HM 0/20 or 5/20 for the last 100k+ miles. It has no leaks, as never needed makeup oil and consumes less than half a quart in between it's 5k OCs.

I'm sure it will end up in my Tacoma at some point too. It seems to clean well and at 11.9 @100° C in the 5/30 flavor is pretty robust for it's weight

I've always had about 3/4 quart consumption on a 7000k OCI on a 2007 Honda pilot EX 3.5L. I started using Maxlife HM and Mobil 1 HM about 40k miles ago, when I hit 110k. The HM made zero difference.

I think for the most part its just slightly thicker oil with a 'seal sweller' in it to help maintain the seals pliability. I feel the only benefit would be the thicker oil part, if you had a slight usage issue.

I've always been curious about Edge High Mileage. Have you installed it yet? High mileage oils used to be said to have more antiwear additives than their non-high mileage siblings. I wonder if this is still the case?

Not yet. This is what the claim for high milage is. Apparently high phosphorus Replacement Technology for emissions systems.

HM oils seem to work just fine for me, but seem utterly unnecessary. In some cases, the HM oil's main point is higher viscosity. All the additives in the world don't replace sufficient viscosity when it's needed. As could be the case with a slightly worn engine. With your OCI's, I'd suspect your engine has exceptionally low wear.

In your case, the standard 5W-30 M1 should be just fine throughout the engine's entire lifespan. If you feel you need more viscosity, step up to regular M1, 10W-30. Or even a 5W-40 M1, like Delvac 1.

Certainly true with certain motors and certain driving conditions for them.

Years ago when cars only lasted 100-125K miles 75K miles may have been considered high mileage but with most cars today that get minimum maintenance lasting a minimum of 200-300K miles I don't consider 75K or even 100K high mileage. The '88 Escort I used for years as a daily driver never saw a drop of high mileage oil. It didn't start burning any oil until between 250 and 300K if I recall correctly and had 518K miles when I quit using it. I'm not one to go right by the book on everything in the manufacturers maintenance schedule either. Basically I watch fluid levels. I change the oil at reasonable intervals and coolant every few years.

Do you need it? Well if its the one on sale at the cheapest price you need it because it isn't going to hurt your car!
