Do I have to use VW 502.00

Do I have to use an oil that meets WV 502.00 in order to protect my warranty? very few oils seem to meet meet this spec, however many oils state that they are Warranty approved for ALL new Vehicles.
The VW dealer is telling my Girfriend she's BEST off bringing the car (2003 2.0 Golf) in for service

I would rather do the job myself with Shell Rotella.
Whats the bottom line?

Yeah, sure stick with the proper oil. There are plenty VW502 oils out there. I wouldn't have the dealer touch my car, though.

Since it's a gasoline engine, I wouldn't worry about it too much. Any good 5W-40 oil such as Rotella will be fine.

The 2003 Golf TDI is a 1.9L in the USA? Did Canada get a different engine?

0W-30 Castrol Syntec (German) meets 502.00/503.01/505.00 and should be available at Wal-Mart in Canada.

Mobil 1 0W-40 should meet this requirement as well.

Does VW allow 0w30 as long as it meets 502.00?
