Just purchased a another mazda cx 5 2017 grand touring nice vehicle. I asked service manager about oil changes. Mazda says every 6 months or 5 k on the miles. Dealer charge is $ 70.00 per change. The 14 we traded only had 22 k so not sure how to play their game. After the first change I can do the others. They want me to use their oil even if I do the change. Let me know your thoughts? Thank you jz.

They can't make you use their oil. However they can make their oil and filter competitively priced compared to the aftermarket. We have the Mazda Idemetsu 0W20 in bottles in parts but have Castrol Edge Professional OE 0W20 in bulk in the shop due to Mazda's marketing agreement with Castrol. We sell the filter for $5.95 and the oil for $6.48/qt. I toss in the crush washer. I know people can get oil from other places cheaper, but I do what I can when people are buying OTC.

I do my own on our '14 CX-5 2.5L. Pretty easy to change. I use QSUD as seen in the signature, but never had a UOA done. I just don't let it go too long because of rumored bad fuel dilution in these engines, so I do it between 5-5.5k miles. From what I hear, the MGMO is really good, but cost prohibitive.

We only use Mazda Genuine filters on Mazdas and Motorcraft on Ford Lincoln Mercury. For what it would cost to ship it any discounts would be negated really. Plus I have to ship oil HAZMAT. I am assuming you got the vehicle at the Mazda dealer in Ft Myers, I have been to that part of the country countless times. Is that the one where one side of the driveway is Mazda and the other in Subaru off of Veteran's Parkway or whatever the street turns into after the bridge?

M1 and a OEM filter about 30 dollars and few minutes of time 5k to 7.5k good to go near 80k on my sky 3 clean clean clean think it could do 10k easy.

You need to minimally change it what is specified in the manual not what the dealer says. If they force you to use Mazda oil or filter they must supply it for free.

Mazda in Fort Myers uses Castrol 0/5w20 blend oil from bulk. Mazda OIL with MOLY is sold only in Quarts. I let them do the first free oil change at ~ 3,000 miles and now I do them myself using 0w20 Pennzoil Platinum and OEM or Fram Ultra oil filters. ed

For me it's mind blowing how can someone that just spent 17-20 K on a new car, can get irritated for spending an extra $80 per year on oil changes.

Change your own oil and good luck and God help with the warranty claims if you ever have engine problems, even if you are not at fault...

It's your car, you can do exactly as you wish. That's not to say your warranty won't be affected if you don't adhere to their terms, but by the same logic they can't make a free man in a free country do something he doesn't want to.

If you do them yourself, SAVE all receipts and records.Meet or do better than the manual suggests. Use products which meet OEM specs or use the dealer parts. Myself, I would never pay a dealer seventy dollars for any oil change. Remember, the service manager is a salesman selling service. They are usually commissioned and want to fill their billfold.

I like doing my own oil changes I still work at 75 yrs young as a carpet cleaner and also have a chevy express 2500 for work. I use full synth 6 qrts and filter @ 6-7500 miles. The mazda say every 6 months or 5 k I will use mazda oil filters and a good oil. Mazda builds a great unit and don't but if something happens during warranty I don't want a problem. The ink on the purchase slips from Walmart don't last long you can't read the print after a while so that could be a problem in time. This is the first top of the line car we ever owned and wow a lot to learn but fun also.

Good post. I have the same reaction. I am amazed by the number of people on this forum who spend a fortune on a new car and the first thing they do is second guess the manufacturer's lubricant requirements. Right away they want to use oils that are the incorrect viscosity or otherwise do not meet specifications. In addition they are more interested in saving a few cents on bargain oil than making sure the correct oil is used in the new engine. This is exactly why I stopped buying used cars decades ago.

For many I think it is a form of conspiracy theory. They seem to think that all auto manufacturers are basically evil and crooked and do not have the best interests of the customers in mind. Therefore their recommendations must all be lies. Some extend that "thinking" to oil companies as well. I just posted an article written by an Amsoil Executive that discusses the adverse reactions that occur in motor oils even when the vehicle is not used. The bottom line of the article was to suggest it was prudent to change even high quality oils out at least once per year regardless of miles.

The reaction I got is that it all had to be a pack of lies just to sell more oil. As you said.....mind blowing.
