so after watching the walking dead and doomsday preppers on my DVR, got on craigslist and started looking at cars for sale. came across a couple land cruisers and a land rover discovery and for some reason the only thought that went through my head was " those cars would be great for riding out the apocalypse".

but then i thought maybe a carburated car for simplicity. possibly an old toyota or nissan truck or suv.or even a biodeisel so i could use animal oil/ fat .

what vehicle or at least what type of vehicle would you guys want? would you bug out to a safe place or take your chances on the road. i am very interested to hear what the bitog community would want

(please dont turn this into a debate about the likelyhood of the $#*@ hitting the fan soon)

It has to be able to survive a EMP strike so it must be a low tech diesel.
It needs to be able to run on alternative fuel like, olive oil, corn oil, etc, stuff you could pillage from an abandoned grocery store. Again a low tech diesel.

It will need good ground clearance as paved roads will be impassable. A PTO would come in very handy in running lots of things one might need.

Old Unimog!

In a scenario like Zombie Apocalypse? Prius.

Mount a China Freight solar panel on the roof to charge the battery pack. Keep the speeds low and you'll seldom need the gas engine. You just have to outrun Zombies and they don't drive.

Wrap the windows in heavy wire mesh. It affords the ghouls with smaller fingers a hold but that is easily remidied by a co-driver and a pair of tin snips. (for the fingers...not the mesh)

Fuel economy. 'nuff said.

When the living attack to steal your food, they will likely have bigger more powerful vehicles and the Prius' size can be a liability, but if Al GoreIII taught us anything, it's that a Prius is capable of triple digit speeds and can likely do it longer than the baddies can hold out with minimal fuel. Of course little Al only had some controlled substances. Not chocked full of gear and food.

All terrain tires. a must. I'm pretty adept at keeping a front wheel drive vehicle moving in off road conditions so I feel fairly comfortable with just front wheel drive.

The only drawback is in the event that the powers that be try to limit the spread of the disease in travel by detonating EMPs. That will render a lot less technologically advanced cars dead. It's going to mess up a Prius good and proper.

My original choice was a diesel UTV with the cabin secured in heavy gauge wire and wood. But enough Zombies would tip that over before you could plow through them.

After the EMP, I should be able to find an M113 APC or Army CUC-V (K20 truck or Blazer with Detroit Diesel) busting track and swapping roadwheels is a snap for me on a '113 after doing it on M60A3s and M1s

Good cargo capacity, one capable of being converted to a Distributor / breaker point ignition and carburetor if not a diesel. Decent mileage and can pull a small trailer. Not too big. I agree with the manual transmission thing too.

Late 80's - early 90's Ford or Dodge 3/4 or 1 ton with the IDI Diesel and a Manual.
4x4 of course.
Upgraded alternator with a [censored] load of those HID Off Road lights on the roof; at least 240* of lighting if I wanted it.
Wire the brake lights with disable capability like Mil Spec.
Aux. Fuel Tank in the bed.
Im sure Ill think of more later.

M1A Abrams. Virtually EMP proof; blast resistant; great personal security; excellent off road capability. Impressive appearance assures easy access to fuel sources. Available colors include: standard olive drab, standard desert camo, standard temperate zone camo, or standard Artic white.
