Cars these days are so yawn and yucch don't care if they all roll over wheels up.

Aunt Mildred will be happy in a Forester; Uncle Arnie in his used Vette ;)

The most advanced and glorious steam locomotives were developed and put into service in the last 10 years of the steam era, before they were replaced by diesel electrics.
General Motors should do the same. It should revive the Chevelle as a muscle car. Give it a 6.2 liter V8, an 8 speed auto or a 6 speed manual, and active suspension.

I bet a well performing "non luxury" high performance sedan of that size would sell to those enthusiasts looking for one last high performance ICE along the lines of the Pontiac GTO, the Plymouth Roadrunner, and, of course, the high performance Chevelles of 55 years ago.

While I love that idea, current GM management does not have the courage/risk to do this. I about fell off my chair when they announced they were committing to next gen v8's for trucks and suvs but that's as far as they're going to go.
GM built that car in Australia and sold here as the Pontiac G8 and then the Chevy SS Sport sedan. No promotion led to slow sales while pressure from Asian autos and labor unions shut down Holden in 2017. I love my Holden-CHEVY 6.2 ltr 6 speed manual 4 door muscle car.

I was going to mention this and the bunch of really nice Cadillac and Buick sedans, but they don't count I guess.

Buick? You'd have to go back a few decades to get something that resembles powerful and sporty v8.

As far as I know, cadillac isn't doing ICE anymore, there is no way they're getting a new v8.

GM is done with ICE cars. That's the unfortunate reality. The vette may hang on for a bit but it's a completely different class and far out of reach of the average American.
 
We had a Malibu as a rental a few years back.
We put quite a few miles on it and it was a thoroughly decent car, certainly the equal of the cheap pseudo SUVs being pushed these days.
I do wonder whether GM and Ford have made a horrible mistake in getting out of the sedan business entirely. If a rapid shift in the market transpires, they'll be left with nothing to offer.
The SUV/truck market now looks compelling, but the big body on frame sedan market once looked the same.

The same is true of four engine piston airliners. The last Connies and DC-7s were delivered even as the first 707s and DC-8s were in service.
Imagine an airline stuck with taking delivery of a plane made obsolete in the time between contracted order and delivery.

I was more addressing the not making a decent sedan. Toyota and Honda don't really have any firing breathing V8s either. Does not mean they don't make a decent sedan. The last gen Regal GS by numbers was better than a lot of Buick's old V8 cars. You have to remember I daily drive a BIG over 400 wheel HP sedan that runs low to mid 12s...I'm not sure I agree with what people here think is "good". I don't find the Camry or Accord impressive. A safe, vanilla, good buy. Sure. The Malibu is the same to me at a lower price point. Mine has been drama free, not a recall and not one warranty repair required.
 
My XT4 is 5" shorter than the 2023 Integra I had previously. It has more interior space, more cargo space, ride height is "chair height" so I'm not falling into it and climbing out. I can seat 4 adults comfortably in the XT4, and if I fold the rear seats down I have a ton of cargo capacity. The small CUV just makes sense from a packaging standpoint.
The hatchback Integra has more cargo space 24.3 cuft vs 22.5, but less interior space at 95 cuft vs 100 for the XT4. Also the Integra gets much better mileage.

The closest thing sold here, to a midsize car wagon, is the Outback, which has a similar seating position and more passenger space overall than almost all compact SUV's, with 32.6 cuft cargo space, and equal or better mileage than almost any AWD compact SUV and many FWD ones....

IMO, logically, the most popular vehicle should be a Malibu/Accord/Camry 2wd wagon, as you get nearly the same mileage as a sedan and midsize SUV people and cargo capacity. But clearly the average buyer feels differently, since these have never sold well here! The Outback does sell well, but its funny how on most trims the roof racks are designed to make it look taller than it is, and its marketing isn't based on its practicality... Only the luxury brands still have a couple mid size wagons left.

Anyways, that's my anti small suv rant for the day, it is annoying to me that they have replaced a useful sized economical wagon, and require all sorts of new engine complexity to still get worse mileage than my old KISS car...

Due to the higher roofline, the cargo area in the XT4 is much more useful. Integra averaged 30-31 MPG, XT4 29 MPG. Weird thing about the Integra, during the summer mileage dropped considerably to the low 20's. We'll see if the XT4 does the same this summer.

Honda and Toyota had been eating their lunch for nearly three decades but they still hung in.
The Fusion maintained six figure volume to the end and the Malibu has as well.
Not killer numbers, but I would think respectable enough to keep GM and Ford in the game.
