02 dodge neon i had posted about a few days ago. changed the oil with Chevron Supreme 5W30 and a P1 filter. put in a little over 4 quarts, about 4.1, ran it a good distance, then checked it the next morning. heres my problem, the oil is so clear, i cant really tell where it is on the dipstick. its definitely in the safe range, and it seems to be full, just not sure, cause like i said, the oil is really clear. and i dont want to add more to take a chance of overfilling.

Wipe the dipstick real clean with paper towel, insert then remove the dipstick and have it under the sun, you will see the oil level on it.

I have the same problem with metal dipstick in my S2000, but I can see the oil level under the sun light.

If you have holes in the dipstick, you can shine a flashlight through
them from the back side; they'll show up as light amber dots.

the spec is for 4.5 qts for a for an oil change, including what you put in the new filter.
ditto what htss_tr said, you have to get the angle of the light JUUUST right, but you'll eventually see it.

- Course when i did the last change on my neon, got distracted, & in a hurry, and dumped the whole 5.1qt bottle in. Checked dipstick, looked well over full mark, but thought "i just poured it in, prolly still flowing down, etc.
and it didn't hit me for 17 days.... little over 100 mi
"I overfilled my engine by .6 qts!!!"
pumped a pint out through dipstick tube.
looked, darker, closer to a cola than a Guinness, but not the lovely amber of when it went in...
