Dino Oil Engine With Fram filter!

We did the same thing in our auto class in school but we never attempted to blow it up. (We used 2.5's with Fuel injection computer mounted to a block of wood beside the engine)

Only the 2.2's ever came with Carbs, so you probably had a 2.2. Pretty much the same engine, different crank shaft and pistons, and a few other odd/ends but otherwise the same engine.

We done cleaned it with some degreaser first because the rocker cover was a leakin' something fierce and made a messy-poo all over the front of the engine!

Looked like someone sprayed it with Hershey Chocolate Syrup.

"Perfect" is the enemy of "good enough".

i am not sure what year chrysler changed the rocker cover but my 95 spirit is nice and dry no oil leaks. had a 91 leaked oil everywhere.rocker cover was black in color,95 is black in color too but not quite same design.

another thing i find about old k cars they are good in the snow.my wife bought a new toyota corolla i put michelin x ice2 on all 4 wheels was disappointed in the snow where the dodge i have 2 12 year snow tires on the front and it just gos and gos.

I had a little ford festiva like that. Thing was awesome in the snow. Only problem was it was so small, it would hook all the ruts left in the snow by bigger vehicles and I'd get pulled all over the place. Never got stuck in it though.

heh.. funny that you mention small cars and big ruts. My Firefly (suzuki forsa with the almight 3 cylinder engine) got a hold of one of those ruts in a big snow storm on the highway 10 years ago. It pulled me right off the road, into the ditch and rolled the car twice. Due to the amount of snow I was able to call a tow truck, flip the car, pull it out, start her up and be on my merry way (wide eyed of course)

They switched over at the end of '94 to the new rocker cover that had the embossed area for a silicone gasket versus the old system that used silicone from a tube with silcone gaskets on the ends. This one is the newer design, but I don't think the previous shoe-maker mechanic that did the head gasket knew he was supposed to use a preformed silicone gasket in this one and just used tube silicone.

What a mess to clean up!

Well, my partner and I got to do a chrysler 2.2, or maybe it was a 2.5, don't quite remember. It was rigged up with a carburator and didn't have the turbo on it anymore. Now bear in mind, these engines had probably been apart 100 times before we got to work on it, and the school being as cheap as they were, would reuse the old oil we drained out of the engines before disassembly. When we put it back together, we would sit them on floor and hide behind a couple work benches while the teacher held them wide open with a string attached to the throttle, with no coolant in the engines at all, as he liked to try and blow them up, or see how long they would run anyways. I think he had inhaled a bit to many exhaust fumes. Anyways, we ran ours, and never did get it to blow. I was truly impressed. Another group did a SOHC 1.6 honda, which at the time I thought was the pinacle of engineering. It probably lasted half as long as ours. It welded the rod bearings fast to the crank and poked 2 of the rods through the block.

Yeah I hear ya Re; the Honda motor.I listen to these kids rev those things into oblivion going past my house. And all I can say is it will come to a horrific death some day (probably in front of their friends

These same kids would probably [censored] their pants if you put them behind the wheel of a 67 Chrysler New Yorker 383/440 4bbl

I bet that layer of varnish wouldn't be there if it was run on M1.

Hate to break it to you but Varnish will occur regardless of oil depending on the engine. My 2001 Impala was run on a mix of 10w30 and 5w30 Mobil 1 Full Synthetic and it has a light tan/brown varnish inside. OCI's were between 3-4k miles. My neglected Jeep has a varnish of the same color with very late OCI's due to my brother driving it and not caring. My Xterra is super clean inside though. Varnish doesn't harm anything and its been stated many times that its normal for some engines to varnish, some oils will clean it but it doesn't affect performance or the reliability of the motor in any way.

I've never had visible varnish in any engine I've maintained.

1988 Nissan 2.4 I4 - run exclusively on Mobil 1 5w30 and 10w30 - zero varnish at 150,000 miles
1991 Toyota 1.5 I4 - run exclusively on Mobil 1 5w30 - zero varnish at 120,000 miles
1995 Toyota 3.4 V6 - run exclusively on Mobil 1 5w30 - zero varnish at 130,000 miles
1995 Ford 4.6 SOHC V8 - run exclusively on Mobil 1 5w30 - zero varnish at 110,000 miles
1996 Nissan 3.0 V6 - run exclusively on Mobil 1 5w30 - zero varnish at 120,000 miles
1999 Ford 4.6 SOHC V8 - run exclusively on Mobil 1 5w30 - zero varnish at 100,000 miles
2005 Ford 3.0 V6 - run exclusively on Mobil 1 5W-20 and Pennzoil Platinum 5W-20 - zero varnish at 60,000 miles
2005 Ford 4.6 DOHC V8 - run exclusively on Mobil 1 5W-20 and Pennzoil Platinum 5w30 - zero varnish to date

Sure, some engines are harder on oil than others, so I must have been pretty lucky in that regard.

But then again, I've seen tons of Ford Modulars (which are known to be easy on oil) varnished to [censored] when run on cheap bulk oil, even when changed at regular intervals. See, I've got anecdotal evidence too.

Best car I ever had in the snow/ice was a 1986 Honda Civic hatchback. It just would not skid or slide going around corners.

Fired this engine up tonight and it sounds great. Double checked for proper compression and all checked out no less than 1/2 PSI less than factory specs.

We filled it with Quaker State Peak Performance 10w30 (what we had for dino on hand).

Took it for a run to Tim-Hortons & back (24KM round trip).

Will keep y'all posted about how long the engine keeps running...

Now here are pics of the engine we remove/replace on a '94 Dodge. This engine we know was run on Q.S. Dino from day 1 with Purolator oil filters from the quick-lube place it was taken to and I have seen the service records in the glove-box. 5K KM OCI's (3K Miles)

It has 288K KM on it (180K Miles) and it blew a ring on cylinder #3 (totally unrelated to the oil) We are reusing this head because it's in great condition compared to the used engine which has a bad head but good block.

Just thought I would post them for everyone to
