Honda went to 1 year or 10,000 miles on conventional a long time ago. GM also allows one year. Ford also just went to 1 year on conventional.

The primary reason the 6 month limit was used was to keep short-trippers from going 7500 miles in the SJ days not because the oil degrades particularly rapidly in the crankcase.

+1 Or better yet, every 500 miles, or how about every 10 miles? After all, you want to do “all you could to take care of your things” right? You know, back in the 1940s and 50s, most people DID change their oil every 1k miles. And they pretty much had to, because oil back then sucked. But the oil companies are CONSTANTLY improving their oils and making them better every year. By the 1970s, 3k was the new standard that everyone followed. And I’m sure the old-school guys JUST LIKE YOU said “you guys are crazy, I still change mine every 1k.” And once again, oil technology has improved so much that 5k is the new standard. So VR1 all I have to say is, get with the times, it’s 2011, not 1973.

Vikas maybe my plan is outmoded as you mentioned but, show me an engine oil related failure using a good oil changing it every 3k and I will listen to what you have to say until then you can change your oil every 100k for all I care but, at the end of the day I know my engine is clean and is going to run as long as the good lord lets it. To me everybody is always trying to do something new and my motto is if it ain't broke don't fix it. 3k is proven on any engine out there. Yea some engines might be fine going longer but, why risk it? Oil is cheap engines or not.

My grandfather made the move from 300 mile to 5000 mile conventional oil changes during his life time. The 300 mile changes were not "broke" so why arent you using them?

Im sure if you try real hard you can manage to keep ip with a guy born in 1905.


PS I have seen a sludged engine with documented 3000 mile oil changes. It wasnt the oil it was the engine.

You know how when you walk down the oil aisle, just browsing the prices, and products to see what may be new, etc....there will be that 1 boisterous customer who will try "selling you" a product off the shelf....? lol....well, one day I had a guy give me this whole rant about running Castrol GTX 10w30 for 1 year OCIs in his Econoline Van....just topped off as necessary, etc. etc...van ran forever, and still running to this day.

My thought is, with adequate top offs, there's no harm in lengthy dino OCIs......

Thanks for the confidence boost. I know a lot of you mentioned buying a syn anyway but I hate spending the extra money when I know its going to waste on a 5k change. It may be only $20 extra a year for syn but getting what I paid for out of a dino for an entire year is amazing. How many people can drive their cars every week for a year and change the oil once? Since I just got 4 gallons of that Valvoline and each jug being the perfect amount for each car thats 2 years of oil changes for only $20. We all know SM/SN is good oil. Do you really doubt a typical 5k dino change not lasting a lengthly amount of time?

According to the Toyota engineers who designed the Yaris, your OCI is 5K miles or 6 months, whichever comes first. Unless you're going to do used oil analysis, I'd recommend you stick to this schedule.
