Did this shop make an illegal move?

Thanks. I was asking more out of curiousity because the brakes on my car squeak a little when cold right upon application for a slight bit of a second, but thats something that I can(and will be) taking care of myself as soon as I get to it. I'm just worried some shop is going to pull that kind of crap on me if I ever need to go in to get something taken care of.
I personally keep a spare key in my wallet. I usually give this to dealers when I get my car worked on.
If they hold my car - I will just get in it and go and later come back asking for the key. (If this was in your case).
Obviously, in your friend's case he authorized the work (probably signed for it) so there is nothing you can do but complain somewhere.

id love to go to a shop where they tell me they cant give me my car back because my brakes squeak a little.. i tear them a new one so bad it'd make their heads spin. sounds like he got scammed big time to me, id try to get something done.
If they tried this squick on me, I'd tell them to park the car out front of the shop, and I *would* have a tow truck take it to another trusted mechanic's shop.

my brakes on my mustang squeal, however they are brembo and they have always squeaked especially when i get them red hot on a road course.
in CA a shop can hold a car that is unsafe to drive and make you get it towed. ive had a case where i work where ive called the CHP and they have taken the plates off of a car that literally had no brakes. the pistons had fallen out of the calipers and the rotors were at .002" thickness, this is on a rotor that should be at around .980". the rear cylinders were leaking, the rear shoes were soaked in brake fluid and the drums were past spec. the car was beign driven on with the e-brake. the owner refused to get the work done and said he just wanted an inspection. cases like that im glad that a shop in CA can call the CHP.

I'm surprised nobody in this thread mentioned that brake squeak is very common and innocuous. I hope it's because it's common knowledge among us posters.
I once got rid of brake squeak..it was quite fun.
I found a lightly-travelled 4-lane highway.
Accelerated to 60MPH, braked hard to 15MPH (in left and right turn lanes) repeated until I smelled the brake pads then drove at 60MPH for several minutes to cool the rotors.
The squeak was gone.

Brake squeak is VERY common - especially on brand new brakes. My squeaking went away after about 5,000 miles on my "new" brakes. Never thought about braking hard to get rid of it...
Same thing happened with my parents car. They even got the highest quality brakes like me... Dealer said it was the high quality materials that made them squeak. lol
