Does anyone know if the Odyssey has a timing chain or belt?

Should I scoop up a "can't give them away" 9-3 or 9-5 or Something teeny like a Fit or Yaris? Then there's always the fact that I just can't see getting rid of our CR-V. At 100k miles, it's practically new. It goes against my logic to trade in a car that still runs.

They all said the same thing: they loved it to death and wouldn't trade it for anything. I never heard any parents more passionate about their cars than those Odyssey drivers.

The Odyssey will also be a MUCH better vehicle because it's far more dynamically competent than a 3+ ton SUV without giving up any meaningful amount of passive safety. You're talking about a vehicle that was built from the ground up and comprehensively engineered to be a good people carrier, vs. something that is basically a heavily modified truck.

Look into a GMC Yukon XL. We picked one up about six months ago and we love it. It has captains chairs on the first and second rows and a good size bench on the third that even me, a 6'5" dude can sit in. The split second row is great as it allows people to get out without having to move or lift seats like in the Toyota Sequoia which was what we were considering before the Yukon.
You can pretty much go onto a lot and ask for the keys because their [censored] near giving them away, well almost.
Their financing was better at the time than USAA... They are hurting and should give you decent rates if they can and your credit is good.

Honestly, it sounds perfect. You really, really should test drive it. It's not just a great car: it's better handling, better riding (imagine that), more rewarding to drive, and more practical than almost anything under like $30k, and it only costs a shade over $20k. Plus, you get all the usual Honda perks (safety, painless ownership, decent MPG). It'll give you your small car jollies when you drive it, while seating 4 comfortably and without feeling like a tin can. I didn't really think too much of it until I drove it, and now it's absolutely my favorite new car anywhere near its price.

i have an Odyssey and had to get the timing belt and water pump done. Costo about $600. Spark Plugs are easy to do on this vehicle- took me less than 30 minutes. All the plugs are easy to access. Even after 105k, they all came out with no trouble- some will say they should have been seized in the head but they all came out without a hitch. Valve adjustment cost me 150 at the dealer and took them about and hour or so.
If you do the big 105k at the dealer with all the extra [censored] they throw in, then yes- it will be 1200-1600. Given alot of the that is changing of fluids, brake fluid, checking everything under the sun. If you DIY- it is nowhere near it.

My 9-5 hasn't been expensive to own at all. Not as cheap as my Honda, but not expensive... If I weren't worried about gas going back up, I'd pick up a new 9-3 in a heartbeat. Really, they get about 30 mpg so even still it's a consideration. I'm just kinda worried about what's going to happen to them and the dealer network if they get sold. My local dealer only started carrying them about 5 years ago, so they are just now getting a grasp on how to work on them. I'd hate to have to wait for some other dealer's techs to learn SAAB repair 101 on my car.

Here is a car summed up for you... The rest is in a technical manual.
1) Gas goes in the tank
2) A pump pushes it to the injector rail
3) The injectors timed by a computer open/close and let the fuel into the cylinders for combustion.
4) The Throttle body plate is attached to a cable or servo/wire that is control by your foot. You determine the amount of air the engine gets and it determines the fuel through the fuel injectors to go with it to make you happy. (as in go forward)
5) The 02 Sensor keeps an eye on things and reports back to the computer to change the fuel settings slightly to keep the green-peace people happy and to keep the polar-bears happy.
6) The sets of valves open and close as necessary to let the fuel/air in and the exaust out.
7) the Piston moves up and down as much as necessary to suck in and push out the gases and to compress the mixture for ignition.
8) the spark plugs ignite the mixture creating engergy output
9) Car moves forward via the power being transmitted to the wheels via the transmisoon
10) Happy smile on your face moving forward.
So as long as you have Fuel, Air, Spark, Timing and a bit of oil/water to keep things lubricated/cool all is well.

Oh yeah, I'm on my second SAAB. Bought my first of eBay in 2003, got it totaled in a big fender bender in 05 and got my 9-5. Been fun to work on and they are nice cars. Own a couple of Haynes manuals, the dealer workshop cd's, and spend lots of time on Saabcentral. The 900 had some small issues that I took care of and I'd started added mods when I lost her. With the 9-5, I was so paranoid about the sludge issue that I didn't dare do performance upgrades. It's a shame, b/c thanks to vigilence and arx, nothing untoward has happened to it.
I'd love to buy a new 9-5 wagon, but unless the dealer goes waaay down on them, I'd stick to a 9-3. The kids are getting bigger and booster seats aren't the space hogs that the smaller seats are. But the rub is that the darn things depreciate so fast, I don't dare waste money on a new 9-5. Mine was 4 years old w/ 50k miles when I bought it in GREAT condition for $10k.

my 04 9-3 has been perfect except for a cabin air filter gasket disintegrating. Plus I can get nearly 40 MPG if driven right. Can't beat that, considering it is a decent size car.
