Dexron VI or not

I've got the transmission out of my '01 GMC Sierra putting a new torque converter in it. Would you refill with Dexron VI at $5/qt or not. If not, should I just refill with Dexron III or go with Mobil 1 ATF?

Definitely use Dexron-VI or any full synthetic DexronIII.

I personally plan to try out the Dex VI in my vehicle with the same transmission. It should be an improvement over standard Dex III and I can get it cheaper than Mobil 1 which I have been using as well. There isn't much experience in people using it on older transmissions yet so there is no way to know how well it might work.

I'm running Dex VI in the 4T60E transmission of the Trans Sport. No issues at all, and shifts seem to be a bit firmer.
