Yes, you're right. The major additive companies, like Lubrizol for example, can sell any blender plant owned by anybody an additive elixir to mix into whatever base oil Lubrizol says is acceptable to meet dexos1/2. So you and I can make our own "brand" of oil which is actually the same as, say, SuperTech, but we put some fancy label on the front we designed. Then we pay GM the dexos fees to put the official dexos logo on the front of the bottle. *** It really does meet dexos1/2 requirements tests though! ****
