Dexos for new truck

Just picked up a left over 2016 silverado with the 6.0. I have a large stock of Valvoline synpower. I prefer to do my own oil changes, as going to the dealer for the freebie is more of an inconvenience than it's worth to me. My question is, I see that Valvoline synpower is no longer on the dexos approved list. Do you guys think it's safe to use what I have, or should I just buy ACDelco synthetic oil from the GM parts counter. Does anyone know what the Valvoline is lacking that is keeping it from the list?
 
I did see Valvoline Synpower does have the Dexos1 symbol. What you may be seeing is that Dexos1 went into a second generation and you have a 2016, which would still be a 1st generation recommendation.
 
I have a 2014 GMC Sierra that requires Dexos 1 5W30. I have a large stash of Valvoline Synpower 5W30 that has the Dexos 1 approved logo on the jugs. That's what I use. I don't see why you couldn't also.

Synpower does meet the original dexos 1 spec required for a 2016 MY vehicle.
It either doesn't meet or hasn't been tested to the next generation dexos cert which becomes effective for 2018 MY vehicles IIRC.
Since you have it, you might as well use it.

If you're looking at a dexos1 Gen 2 list, Valvoline may be missing from the new list because their additive chemistry is not great for LSPI in DI turbo engines...which would be of absolutely no concern to you in your Silverado. I'd say use your Synpower and don't worry about it, dexos1 Gen 2 is really targeting all the small displacement turbos that have been showing up the past few years.
 
It's not my $40,000.00 truck -but you should be OK in using it.

If the OP bought a leftover '16 MY truck, he might have paid $40,000.00 for it, but only if he paid in Canadian dollars, LOL!

Would you guys recommend that I switch oil brands after I use this stuff up?
 
Yes, Pennzoil Platinum or the Ultra. I like the additive package in it better. Plus it has some moly in it unlike the Valvoline.
 
I don't know NHRATA.

I have an LQ4 in my 2003 and the books simply states 5w-30 preferred but 10w-30 acceptable above zero Fahrenheit. No stipulation about dino or syn, dexos, gm 6094 or even a SM or SL rating. Im not even sure it even specifies an API oil, but I can check if you like.


Anyway, I have ran 10w-30 in it since 2015 when I got it doing yearly changes (I just did the third in December). First two were conventional and this third is a blend and I will probably stick with it. I can say I was a bit torn on trying a 5w-30 since it is preferred, seems to be the favorite viscosity nowadays, and I dont see any towing in the near future.

But for you being in New England, 5w-30 seems perfect. I have a blue bottle of Valvoline that qualifies Dexos1 on the reverse of the bottle, but there is no emblem on the bottle. I think VDB or VSP in the aforementioned weight/grade would be nice-just stick with it. See if you can go the first 100,000 on the same oil. I think you and your truck will do better by sticking to the same oil. My pilot instructor mentioned that to me once, like 15 yrs ago, saying that an engine may prefer a steady diet of a single particular oil- instead of changing brands and grades every oil change.
