I just happened to be looking up the Mobil Full Synthetic PDS and noticed that the 5W-30 is apparently Dexos 1 Gen 3 licensed now.

Interesting that the first product that shows up as licensed Dexos 1 Gen 3 is Mobil Full Synthetic, not even Mobil1, but I wonder, is Exxon-Mobil the supplier of AC Delco, perhaps AC Delco motor oil is the same as Mobil Full Syn and as a result is one of the first products that's been Dexos1 Gen3 approved.

Chevron made a big deal about their licensed additive back in July, I would have thought they would follow that up, but so far, nope. Go figure.

Or maybe they're just sitting on a pile of old stock.

According to Lubrizol Performance Chart, D1G3 is focused more on Oxidation and Deposits more than Wear comparing to D1G2.

Which raises a possible question for those on here... Do you just go after and find and buy gen 2 because it actually has better wear protection vs the new gen 3 ? ?

The deposit and oxidation prevention of the new Dexos gen 3 is not all that much better than gen 2. So would you rather have better wear protection or just slightly better oxidation and deposit prevention ?

While there's lots of gen 2 oil around still many may well rather have that vs the new stuff.

Well you can always get an oil with a higher HTHS rating for a peace of mind.

True... Or... You can find the older gen 2 Dexos approved oil. That's still around quite a bit.

And I think it will be around for a bit of time.

I suspect it's splitting hairs either way

Don't know man...

Shouldn't things be going forward aka better and not backwards ??

Using those charts compare API SL vs newer API SP. SP much "better" performance over SL. That actually makes sense. This other with the Dexos spec is a bit odd.

A little bit disappointed.
To counter deposit, I can go with 3k miles OCI with techron along with top tier gas, but I guess short OCI can't reduce wear a lot?

Dexos finally populated their Gen3 section:

Edit - Someone forgot to edit the website header and it shows up as Gen2 in the forum software, but it does take you to the Gen3 page.

Whopping 9 oils listed on there as of 12/1.

I wonder if the 7th listed is really a dexos1 Gen 2 like depicted both here and at the site itself?

Totally didn't catch that when I glanced at the page. I think their web person needs some training.

So, 8 oils. Judging by their certification numbers it is not a D3.

This may mean nothing but I once noticed that AC Delco oil had the same shape as a Mobil bottle. Same with Motorcraft and Kendall/66/76

It’s not the same as the Mobil but yes, ac Delco and motor craft are P66.
