Dex3, Dex6, Mobil1 etc ATF argument brewing help

In my 2005 GM, the last year to spec DexIII(H), I prefer M1 ATF over DexVI. With licensed DexVI there was a hard "thump" when 1st or reverse was engaged from neutral. Otherwise, DexVI was fine. M1 ATF is smooth all of the time without any feel of slippage. Shifts are solid without a lurch when going into gear.

I was at my local Meijers yesterday, there were about a dozen or so bottles of M1 on the shelf, all but a couple of them had the Mazda MV rating listed. Maybe they are listing it again..? Or maybe this was just old stock that was found in the back somewhere, that someone rotated out to the sale floor when the stock got low. Either way, none of the M1 bottles that were out a few weeks ago had it listed (I checked all of them).

But what is your sample size and mileage duration? I see that you have 180k on your truck, how many ATs and how many of those mailes have used multi-spec fluids?

Given the rather poor lifetime of ATs in general, Im not sure that one can easily/adequately discern a difference, but I sure dont want to bet a $3k rebuild on it...

3k rebuilds? Maybe on those BMW's. My full tilt 4L80E equipped trucks are only $1700 from a first class rebuilder with new TC and an UNLIMITED mileage warranty! That's right, no limit.

Add to that we routinely run them over 200k miles in tough inner city use in 9200 pound vehicles. It's truly a severe duty cycle.

Other than that I'm right with you, use a purpose built fluid for an exact spec or you could be risking it all. And with the way modern trans work the adaptives will ramp up the pressure to control the slip you cannot feel!

OK, so the rebuilt core is $1700. How much does the average person off the street pay in labor to get the thing moving again?

Ill bet that very few common customers are out the door with a rebuilt AT for less than $3k.

The 4sp in my mother's plymouth was just over the $3k point when done.

Dyno certified rebuilt cores for my w123 MBs (never needed one) are around 1395+ TC+ labor.

There is a reason why I drive MT vehicles. I can do 3 clutches for the cost of a rebuilt 80E AT. Given that Ive not yet worn a clutch out (Im at 140k on my oldest one), I think the economics are there.

A little over 150,000 miles. Since the first scheduled service at 30K the trans has seen Mobil 1 ATF, and now Red Line D4 ATF exclusively. It still shifts and behaves like it did when new, if not better.

Well maintained 4R70Ws & Es seem to last a good long time, barring a defecting sun gear weld which seemed to be something of a minor issue from 2000-2002.

One of my best friend's is a Ford tech, I can have my 4R70 rebuilt for about $200 using all new OEM Ford seals, gaskets and friction materials, assuming I don't have a converter issue which would add another ~$200.
