Ordered a filter off Amazon, because it seemed like the lazy thing to do and the price was right. In a mailing envelope, not box. Envelope somewhat crumpled, address sticker torn, oil filter box "crinkled" and *drum roll* oil filter dented. About the size of a thumb and a couple millimeters deep probably. I looked at it, reported to Amazon (they're sending another...) and thought "I wonder if it's usable..."

I will repeat what I have said multiple times about dented oil filters, I personally would not use one because of the info in this video:

Things you don't really think about until you see a video like this. Great video!

A similar thing happened to me with Amazon, I decided to use it anyway and had no issues.

But I'm now hesitant about buying oil filters online. Another time, I ordered one from NAPA and the filter came dented and without the rubber gasket. Customer service did send me a new one but It was still annoying.

Also when I order filters from RockAuto, I get 6 year old filters.

Yup, I never thought about it either, and had used dented filters in the past without thinking twice about it.

Now that I know, even though the chance is miniscule, I just can't use one.
I would rather toss it (would actually just cut it open) and buy another one than use it, I am am cheap when it comes to filters.

Hoping to cut it open this weekend. If I remember and don't have dirty hands, will post pics. Lol

@blupupher that is a great video! Now I won't use dented filters any more.

On a side note, I found their comment that "Most spin on filters can be installed by hand; this eliminates the possibility of damage caused by installation tools" to be interesting. This is true for most filters with sufficiently strong cans, but I completely crushed a Puro One (by hand) a few years ago while trying g to get it tight!

The grippy stuff on fram cans makes them really easy to install by hand, the annoyance however comes in taking them off because the grippy crap makes it hard to get my cap wrench on.

When installing by hand, still need to only grasp and turn the filter at the fluted end, where an end cap tool would install. That's why Fram only puts the grippy coating on the end.

Although the new AAP Fram filters are supposed to be grippy all over.
True, and same with Purolators and a few others. Still want to only torque them on the fluted end of the can where it's the strongest.

I found out the hard way! But I attributed the crushing experience to either a) the weak can, or b) my super gorilla-like grip! :)

Annnd the replacement they sent was dented, too 🤦‍♂️ Shipped it back, getting money back, I'll go to a brick and mortar so I can check before buying...

Yep, I don't buy oil filters on like for this very reason ... plus you never know how old they are until you see the date code.

Fram tech told me a few years ago to absolutely not use a dented filter. Says they are quite fragile, although I think the road from factory to store can be a bit rough sometimes.
