Denso

Flow is outstanding. But in later tests where I learned how to get more consistant results, filtration is just "OK" in my book.

I switched to Toyota TRD filters with a 98% efficiency @ 20 microns and full synthetic media for my Tacoma.

The standard OEM Denso is still a pretty good filter overall I think.

Your testing is the reason I picked up a PureONE PL20195 tonight. Will be swapping out the Denso with the PureONE tomorrow ... even though I just changed oil & filter 500 miles ago - using synthetic, so many more miles to go.

No biggie ... $5 isn't gonna kill me for wasting a Denso.

Ya. I just prematurely pulled off a $14 K&N (which is a good filter that I really like) to put on the TRD filter. I just got the TRDs and wanted one on there. I dunno. No good reason...I just wanted a TRD on there even though I sort of wasted a perfectly good filter.

TRDs vary a lot because the manufacture is farmed out to American and (I think) Japanese makers. Some are red and called a "sports filter" some are white and and have flutes. Some are black with a nut instead of lutes like K&N--and I believe they are built by Champion Labs.

I read on a forum that someone contacted them about a TRD that was only 50% efficient at 20 microns--and I believe it was the red sports filter they were referring to

The PTR43-00080 that I use replaced most Denso filter numbers is the black K&N type and uses the dense, arch pleated full synthetic media. It is labeled as 98% efficient at 20 microns.
Cutaway looks just like a Royal Purple filter, but the TRD has a rounded gasket unlike the K&Ns and RPs.

More pics:

Presumably, the TRD I use is in the ballpark of the Purolator Classic as their ratins @ 20 microns are so similar.

Ouch ... that's not a good rating. If I was to use the TRD, I'd certainly go for the full synthetic media with the 98% @ 20 micron rating.

But, for half the price, I can use the PureONE PL20195 and get 99.9% @ 20 microns.

The Denso filtering and flow is making wonder if the Toyota sludge problem still exists if an aftermarket filter is used. Amsoil stopped carrying their oil filters for Toyotas (maybe not all but for some current Toyota engines).

I just watched a video and it said the Royal purple is 99.9%@25 microns and 90%@12 microns. Yes Champ Labs makes the Royal Purple, TRD filter and AFE Pro-Guard D2 oil filters. All three appear to be clones sharing the same media.

Based on other "Flow vs. PSID" data I've seen, even the best flowing filters have around 5 PISD at 12 GPM with 200 deg F oil. It think the 2.5 PSID they show at 12 GPM is too low for "traditional filters".

I hear ya. You pay for the heavy construction. And if a threaded end bypass is all that important to you, you get that too.

Naah. The aftermarket filters are pretty much invisible on the pressure curve for street engines.

labman would be all over those TRDs if they were $2.98!

The media is likely licensed from Donaldson.

Ya. he seems to have a lower limit that what I am willing to spend...If they wer 2.98 they'd probably be the most popular filter out there.
I figure in the long run, no more filters than I go through in a year compared to gas and other auto expenses, I might as well go for it!
(With all the parts stores stocked with M1s, K&Ns, I'm not alone.)

Lot of similarities here! Note the *AA* stamping on both, although the Delco has 8 holes vs 6 for TRD. Insides look almost the same as well.

The UPF is Champion we decided?..I forgot.
TRD sure looks like the same baseplate with a different gasket holder tacked on and different hole punching.

UFP is Champion FOR SURE now..given that TRD Pic which is Champion made. One of the *hallmarks* of the Champion filter is the presence of ONE LARGER HOLE which is present in both filters pictured here. That *AA* stamping clinches it!
