I have to say that even though I try to buy American products whenever I can, what you say about Japanese products is what I have experienced too. Their QC is second to none.

Denso? Yep had several of their wonderful starters in my mini van. The famous 'clicking' would appear every few years. The repair kits are still available on ebay.

On the other hand, the last alternator I bought from Toyota was remanufactured in USA and it wasn't nearly as good condition. Not to mention that when I called the local dealer, he quoted $200, with the list price being $166.19. I didn't bother to negotiate.

The manufacture quality of the alternator is excellent and top-notch, and I am wondering if it's almost brand-new except for the housing that was entirely reconditioned. I couldn't ask for a better deal for an OEM alternator. As I said, the Toyota remanufactured-in-USA DENSO I got 15 years ago wasn't in as good condition and I could see a lot of dirt on the stator coil windings.

Similarly, the DENSO spark plugs made in Japan have higher quality than the DENSO spark plugs made in USA, the latter being branded by Toyota and sold by the dealer.

Do they sell to the public? Their site looks like it is for business accounts only.

Thanks for the info.

Apparently so. Who knew! :facepalm

Plating on the spark plug is very important. That's what keeps the plug from being seized on the cylinder head.

DENSO North America imports and manufactures DENSO products in Long Beach, California.

If you live in the LA area, Completes Plus is a great wholesale seller where you can go and buy them even if you don't own a shop.

Otherwise, search for wholesale or retail dealers here:

You can also buy it online at Amazon or other online dealers such as below:

If you live in or near LA, Completes Plus is the best place to get DENSO products. You pay the wholesale price and don't pay shipping if you pick it up will-call. If they don't have a particular DENSO part in stock, they will make a quick call to DENSO North America in Long Beach and get it the next day. They have four locations in the LA area:

....hold an Autolite/Champion plug against a NGK or Denso JDM plug, you'll see the difference.

Used plenty of Autolites without a problem. My Dak had Autolites...they had close to 100K and while worn, they were actually in pretty good shape.

In the 50's and 60's Japanese products were mostly cheap disposable, but starting in the early 70's their products were much improve.

For you, the nearest Completes Plus location would be in Torrance.

It's true that Denso First Time Fit products are darn good and are as good as the OEM offering they sell to car makers.

I have seen plenty of stories from people that look at two
identical vehicle models, where one is made in Japan, and the other is made in the US or another country and most everyone
finds that at least visually the Japanese produced product has better fit and finish and attention to detail.

Thats what anti-seize lubricant is for. But you still can't judge the quality of the plating by how shiny something is.

Actually First Time Fit is often a better quality product compared to what Denso offers under manufacturers names. Air filters, oil filters...

I always stick with the OEM for most parts.

Denso, Sumitomo, Aisin, Nissin, Tokico... Never had a problem with any of them for any Japanese vehicle.

Antiseize lubricant is strongly not recommended by DENSO as well as NGK, as it results in overtorqueing. Plating is supposed to break off during removal, which prevents seizing.

Japanese-made bolts usually have excellent plating. I know this because bolts for my car come from Japan. Of course, being shiny is one of the quality indicators of surface finish. It means nothing went wrong during plating and it's as smooth as possible. Besides, the made-in-USA plugs had other quality issues (electrode centering and plating) as well.

I strongly disagree! Once you get out of sunny So Cal and into... pretty much everywhere north and east of it, Japanese bolts can SUCK to get out! Especially Nissan under body bolts. I don't know who their supplier is, but they fail at corrosion protection. HANDS DOWN, I have run into more stuck, rusted, corroded and seized bolts on Hondas, Toyotas and Nissans than on domestic brands. And I work on WAY more domestics than imports.
