Dealership Tire Prices

Has anyone shopped their dealership on tire before considering an independent tire shop? I was quite surprised by how competitive their price was.
These tire prices and some of the very low oil change prices are bait to get the car owner into the habit of using the dealership for all maintenance and repairs. Nothing wrong if you comparison shop, but for other work the price is likely sky high. The repair shop can be more profitable for the owner of the dealership than the new car sales.

Out of curiosity, I called my usual Toyota dealer and asked them for a price on a 195/65-15 sized Michelin Primacy MXV4 for my Prius. They gave me this quote:

$126/tire * 3= $378
Fourth Tire = $1
Mounting and Road Force Balance= $20*4= $80
Wheel Weights and Disposal= $20

Total= $479 + tax. That price also includes two years of road hazard and free lifetime rotations.

Tire Rack wants $115/tire + $13/tire for shipping, so the price from the dealer is phenomenal. It is actually cheaper than any tire dealer.

I tend not to stick to one brand, so I was able to get 4 Fuzion HRi's online and installed for $323 and change. The tire size was 185/65/15, which is similar to yours. I can't see myself spending more than $100 each for some 15" tires, but that's just me.

This is so true.

This past October was looking for new BFG Rugged Trail T/A's for my wife's 2005 Exploder, they came as factory tires and she really liked them and they held up decently for our roads.

Not sure but the Ford dealer wanted around $179/tire plus 7% NJ sales tax as well as the mounting and balancing charge. I got them from DT for $149, shipped for free, NO NJ sales tax and got a $70 rebate that paid for 2/3 of the mounting and balancing cost. It was a no brainer, DT was less. Too bad we don't have a DT store near by. Not even sure if there are any in NJ.

That's a very good question. A few years ago when I needed tires on my Buick, the local Ford dealer had a great price on my size, which Ford uses on Mustangs. The deal was "Ford vehicles only."
