My daughter did ask and they say its been there for a while but wal mart just adds it into the price of the oil ????Did anyone else pay this at Costco The oil there was no bargain but i wanted it changed the same day so we got hammered.
$36.99 for 6 quarts plus $2.36 for some rip off tax and than regular tax on the oil..
She went to wal mart first but they were out of Mobil 1 5w30

However, since you used to (allegedly) rebuild engines for a living, you should know that a using 5W20 in an engine that calls for 5W30 won't hurt it, especially on a new, tight engine. So....what oil viscosity did you use on all the engines that you rebuilt?

Not quite true. There's other parts of the engine other than the bottom end. My engine has rod and crank min max clearances of 0.012-0.038mm and 0.01-0.023mm, respectively. Pretty tight where I could get away with using a xx-20 oil. However, my engine has buckets not rollers, hence, the 5w30 recommendation from the manufacturer.

My Subaru dealer gave me paperwork that said they put 0W20 in my car at least twice, the manual and cap both say 5W30. Most of the Subaru lineup uses 0W20 now and I'm not sure if they didn't have 5W30 or they just didn't even think about it. When I would bring it up, I would get a blank stare for a few seconds and then a solemn assurance that they had, in fact, used the proper oil.

After that [censored] and an instance in which they mangled my drain plug, causing a huge mess in my garage and necessitating a return trip to the dealer when I was crazy busy at work, I finally started doing my own oil.

That sound like NJ sales tax. I know it was reduced from 7% down to 6+% effective January 1st this year.

Coke and Dr. Pepper are interchangeable, like two SN/GF-5 dexos1 options of the same viscosity, with different brand names.

Honestly I got mad at my dealer long time ago for putting wrong oil in also, they changed it. But still the car ran for 3 miles with wrong oil. Based on what ive seen with peoples franken oil blends people do around here I wouldn't be mad these days about it anymore, these engines run trouble free on these combinations for 1000s of miles. [censored] happens their busy also and people make mistakes.

If NJ is like SC the disposal fee/tax is charged up front then you empty it at the next change free of charge at whatever recycling center. It's just levied at the point of purchase.

It really isn't a big deal. My girlfriend's 01 Celica called for 5w30, but was later back-specified to 5W-20 as well. I've been using 5W-20 in it for the past 4000 miles or so and it still runs fine. Hasn't blown up yet. I've also used 5w30 in a car that called for 0W-20. Again, not a big deal.
