Dealer Put Wrong oil Into New Vehicle

Something is wrong with a dealer who insists on using the incorrect viscosity recommended by the manufacture. If the manual and oil cap show a viscosity that should be used then I would insist on the dealer putting the correct grade in. This idea of letting a dealer continue to do what they want and not the manufacture by saying is NO BIGGY or it doesn't matter is wrong. A sloppy greedy dealer trying to save $$ at the customers expense will not be my dealer. Ed

They put the wrong oil in, period. This is the same dealer that would try to deny your warranty claim if you used the wrong oil.

In your place I would take the receipt for the Mobil 1 back to the dealership, and make sure that they reimbursed you for the additional cost you paid because of their mistake. Or to put it a different way, their unwillingness to find and install the correct oil.

+1

I agree Eddie! Odd are that dealer put in conventional and not synthetic also. So many use the dealer for synthetic oil changes - get charged for synthetic and receive conventional instead.

Also, the outside of those oil drums may state something like (for instance) Pennzoil and what's inside is cheap, bulk Citgo oil.

$37 for Mobil 1 ($6.16/qt)?

There are better deals than that out there at Walmart. M1 and PP are $5/qt. Synpower at $4.50 and even SuperTech syn at $3.50. Quaker State Ultimate Durability is $3.95/qt.

And if you use the current 2017 SOPUS rebates the PP is $3/qt and the Quaker State Ultimate Durability $2.55/qt.

So much for a free enjoyable oil change! That's why I do my own oil changes.

I am saying just the opposite!
$37 is very cheap for a shop oil change using Mobil 1 synthetic. Plus they all usually charge the same ''posted'' price, for up-to five quart crankcases.

And give this man a prize. If their failure screws your new cars motor its their fault but they probably try and screw you if you did what they did.
At least they got oil in it. My friends car, a Mitsubishi 3000 GT VR4 was driven out onto the lot without the lot monkey putting any in and she then attempted to drive off. They wanted to put in a motor assembly from a wrecked car

You know how it is. Only the dealers are allowed to deviate. You ask them for a different grade, they'll tell you that it will "void your warranty." You ask them to follow the specification, and they ignore you.

Absolutely. As I've mentioned before, with the G37, I got it used from a Chrysler dealer. They offered me a lifetime warranty if they were allowed to do the oil changes. When they gave me the car, it had more than a litre over capacity. Sure, I'll have them do the oil changes, right?

I think you should riot. This is an injustice against humanity in general and America in particular. Next thing you know they'll be burning the constitution in the parking lot.

I did not only rebuild engines for a living i also owned my shop for many years and i have been an expert witness on the stand in a number of engine related lemon law cases so i know it's important to use the correct oil...

As an industry professional, I am surprised you have come to this forum for advice on how to deal with the situation. 5W20 or 5W30 it really doesn't matter . Given the low miles, I wonder if they even bothered to change it?

I'm well aware of it. There are exceptions to every rule.
I was talking in general.

I think you did good having your daughter go grab the correct oil for your car. I would never feel comfortable about using a thinner than spec oil.

Sounds like the server brought dirty dish water instead of Dr. Pepper

Hyundai has been recommending 5w20 in almost all of their vehicles for many years. If they are specifying 5w30 in the 2017 Santa Fe, I'm sure they have a reason.

I would march my happy butt back in and have them replace it with the correct oil. The shop I USED to go to, before I started changing my own oil put 5w30 in my 2006 Accord. I noticed it on the invoice while still in there parking lot, I walked right back in and told them it took 5w20. The guy shrugged it off and said it was warm enough to use 5w30, while that may be true its still not the correct spec so I had them change it. They were not very happy with me.

Im not coming here for advice i was asking about the extra "Tax" on the oil that Costco charged us.
I already changed the oil i just bring it in during warranty just in case there is a problem there is no better way to win a lemon law case if the stealer does not want to honor your engine warranty.

Remember if a dealer does not honor your warranty and you played the game the way they wanted Lemon Law is your best friend and it's FREE

Thanks for reiterating that. I can see from this notice by the NJ treasury, most petroleum products have some type of tax on them in NJ. I bought oil in Jersey City last summer and I did not see the tax at Walmart. That new gas tax may be more comprehensive than they disclosed. This article was updated in late November. I don't know if you purchased oil between then and now, but this may have gone into effect the first day of this year.
Here is the link: Petroleum Products Gross Receipts Tax
At the bottom of the file there's a link to email them. I guess if you want to find out more info straight from the source you could ask them. I do not know if Costco will be of any help, but it doesn't hurt to ask them about the new tax. Note that in this article, motor oil is not exempt from a tax in NJ.
