So I just (30 minutes ago) got my oil changed at the dealer (cuz it was free) in my 2010 Toyota Sienna (2GR-FE). After reading all the horror stories about the [censored] dealers pull, I watched them like a hawk the whole time from the waiting area. After putting up with the tech "breaking" the drain plug, walking off for 10 mins, pulling the filter container, walking off for 10 mins, etc. etc., verifying rotation pattern on my phone since I didn't know some Toyota's did front-back front-back, I was reasonably satisfied, so when going to sign off and leave, I noticed the sheet said 5w20. Of course I questioned it and the advisers concurred that "there was no part number for 5w30". I said my invoice 6 months ago had it on it. They then changed to "they used the wrong part number but the tech put the right oil in". They offered to check with the tech to make sure he put 5w30. Of course, he says he did and I guess I believe them, but what if they did put 5-20 in? After doing much reading on here, I guess it wouldn't hurt anything for my van to have 5-20, so should I be concerned? Thanks...

Typical of a dealership, screw up, lie, cover up. You really have nothing to worry about. I'd force them to do it over again, but that's just me.
I have $8 oil changes for life with my Jeep, it is 3 years old next month, I haven't been to them yet. If the oil changes were free for life I'd still pass. Somethings just aren't worth it to me, even when free. JMO

Depends. Are you more interested in doing the right thing for your van, or in keeping your dealership honest?
If it's the former, as long as you're sure 5w-20 is the correct grade, then don't sweat it.
If it's the latter, then do the follwing:
1. Buy a quart of the 5w30.
2. Pull a sample for oil analysis (make sure the lab you select does a viscosity measurement at 100º C).
3. Top off with the oil you just bought.
If the viscosity at 100º C is between 9.3 and 12.5 cSt, you got the 5w30; if it's lower than 9.3 cSt, you got the 5w-20.
If it's the former, as long as you're sure 5w-20 is the correct grade, then don't sweat it.
If it's the latter, then do the follwing:

I care more about my vehicle, but are you saying being sure 5-20 is what they put in? Then no, I will never be sure of what they put in.... as long as it won't hurt, I don't really care. It's a family vehicle that gets lots of highway miles.

Trust me the less your car/truck goes to the dealer the better. That has always been the case for the local dealerships where I live. Typically a free tire rotation means they spin the tires while the vehicle is up in the air during the oil change, unless you're there to watch.
I watch my employees when I work with them, I don't have the energy to watch the dealers employees. I'd rather do the work myself, less headaches, and its done right.
I only wish I could deal with some of the guys on this site that are techs, life would be much easier dealing with them!

If for some strange reason they used the 5W-20 you (the van) will be just fine. Did they use Toyota branded oil?

Yes, at least that's what the invoice said, sticker said, and rewards package said. Isn't there "bulk" oil Toyota brand?

i would not be concerned with a 5w-20 in there, though I may be a bit more careful about driving really hard unless I know more about the use of 5w-20 in that engine...
I dont think that abnormal wear would be a concern. My concern would be warranty due to the use of the correct oil. However, since it was done at the dealer, I do not see it as a huge deal...

All else fails, keep your receipt! Ride the car with the phone, radio, and other electronics off for the next couple days and see if you notice any change(s) in performance, mpg, noises, etc....if you have any doubts, take the car back. They gotta have "some" sort of warranty.
Could possibly be, that they were "out" of the 5w30 oil, so they swapped in the 5w30 instead....

I know that happened at Walmart one time...signed up for their "Standard" valvoline Premium 5-30 Oil service, they told me they didn't have the oil in stock, so I said fine, put in the Synpower 5-30 instead (synthetic oil) - ended up getting their 55$ oil service for 31.80 because they didn't "scan in" the bottle of synPower

Judging from OP's description on the workmanship of the tech, the bigger issue would be them messing something up during the service, not oil viscosity.
Same thing happened to me on my brand new Turbo car that called for 5w30. The invoice showed 5w20. When I got home, I checked the oil, it was a bit below the lowest level line. My car takes 5.7 quarts so I'm assuming they just dumped in 5 quarts and went on their way. Then I seen the invoice saying 5w20. That was the first and last oil change I let them do. I just can't stand when they don't seem to care. The 5w20 probably came from the fact that all the Mazda 3's take that viscosity, but the Speed 3's are direct injected turbo's and call for 5w30. The car's are kind of hard to tell apart other than the badge on the back and if you know what you're looking for, a minor spoiler difference and different rims. So I guess he just saw a Mazda 3 and dumped 5 quarts of 5w20 in it and called it a day.
Your worried too much. I`v been thinking of trying the 5W20 in my 05 RX330. Toyota back speced to 06,the worst that can happen(according to them) is a little oil usage,some puff`s of smoke at start up,and unusual engine noises. Heck some medications have worse side affects than this.

Your worried too much. I`v been thinking of trying the 5W20 in my 05 RX330. Toyota back speced to 06,the worst that can happen(according to them) is a little oil usage,some puff`s of smoke at start up,and unusual engine noises. Heck some medications have worse side affects than this.
I just don't want one of the side effects to be a heart attack and happen 5 years down the road... not to mention any drugs...
