I witnessed an incident today that has me thinking about dash cams for all my cars. We have a lot of homeless people here. Today I was following a homeless guy on a bicycle on a narrow two lane road. We came to a four way stop intersection and the homeless dude zipped through without stopping, narrowly missing a car that had stopped and just started moving. It seemed like he did it deliberately. It seemed like he was trying to get hit by a car. I am guessing some ambulance chaser lawyer would be happy to sue the motorist.

In this case, I would have testified against the homeless guy. What if there were no witnesses? A dash cam may save you.
 
There's been quite a few instances where I say "And that's why I have a dash cam!"

Mine hasn't saved me or anyone else yet, but there's been some really close calls that I was almost hit and would have had video.
 
Dashcam can also show you're at fault. My driving is bad enough, I don't need a record of it!

That doesn't erase it if its uploaded to the cloud.
 
With the two near misses i had in the last three weeks or so, i am totally looking at one now.

Never seen this kind of crazy in all my years of driving lately.....

And that would be a felony. Just don't mention it, save the old video together with the camera(at least until the statute of limitations is over), and buy a replacement camera. That way if the other party finds out about it and files discovery, you can claim "I stopped using that camera and forgot all about it after the accident, but I still have it somewhere." At that point it will be used against you but it would be so much worse if you couldn't produce it.

There's lots of dishonest people out there. I've been involved in a few and it's amazing the lies people will tell to try and get out of trouble. I remember one time when I tboned someone and the guy tried to say it was my fault. I guess I told a pretty good story and he didn't as he ran the light late and the insurance believed me. I was just in a accident recently and I started up the camera to record when talking to the guy, he knew it was his fault but kept quiet while I yelled at him for what he did and he said nothing but didn't really admit guilt. I keep thinking I should just use my phone as a dash cam.

I didn't see the purple text, but I'm glad you were just joking. If you'd ever been screwed by someone like that, you probably wouldn't have looked at it as a joke, either. Sorry I misunderstood.
 
I keep going back and forth whether or not to get a real one... got a GoPro Hero Sesssion, takes great photos during the day, low light performance is just okay. 1080p60 or 4K 30fps with a nice wide angle feature.

Why would u think that you need a dash cam? Unless hit-n-runs are a huge issue I just can't envision a scenario where you'd need one.

I've been using dashcams for about 6 years now. I've had 3 instances where having the dashcam saved my insurance rates. First was a nutty driver who sideswiped me in a construction zone (she told the State Trooper that I intentionally hit her car but the video showed otherwise), second was a lawn care company dropping debris on the highway causing over $2500 in damages (cracked windshield and front paint damage) and lastly was ice/snow coming off of a semi trailer cracking the windshield. When crashes/ collisions occur the other party may lie like crazy to get out of fault. My wife's dashcam caught this collision a few days ago: Minor collision

Plus, the bicycle rider has right of way and you would need to be careful around them.

It is a felony to destroy my own property? My camera, my data...I don't get it. If I want to destroy my own property, not sure you could stop me.

It is a felony to destroy my own property? My camera, my data...I don't get it. If I want to destroy my own property, not sure you could stop me.

It's called spoliation. In most places you can't destroy evidence of an event that can lead to a legal action. It can be seen as a criminal act and result in some major headaches.
