The local shop has a "Czech Mauser" for $225. It looks to be in fairly decent shape and is chambered in 8mm Mauser. It was almost closing time so I didn't get all the details.

I think but I'm not sure...that it is a CZ BRNO vz24.

Anybody have any experience with Czech built Mausers? What about the 8mm round? I just wanna do some target shooting at the range and have a conversation piece at the same time. The local shop also has Mosin-Nagants but out of stock.

Should I buy? Or should I spend the extra for a true Kar98k?
 
I've got a 1967 Brno .22, and a mid 90s CZ527.

They are both great rifles and pretty accurate.

the 8mm Mauser round a few guys at the club use (in Yugo Mausers). Seems to do a pretty OK job, ammo's not as cheap as (say) 7.62 Russian, but seems good quality.
 
I use corrosive ammo in my Mauser's all the time. Actually it is just the primer mixture that can be corrosive. When I get home I wipe out the bore real well with Hoppes #9. Wipe off the bolt face with Hoppes #9 also. Then clean as usual, no problemo.

Read up on using surplus ammo and you will see what I mean, it is no big deal to use and clean up after. I have a few thousand rounds of 8mm that I picked up cheap before prices went bonkers.
 
It VZ24 is a great rifle as is the mosin nagant. I have a mosin, yugo m48a, k98 and a 1903. All are great and for just blasting at the range you'll love the VZ24. No problems using the corrosive ammo, but if you don't clean it when you get home the bore will rust. The wolf/brown bear stuff works fine if you want non corrosive.

You NEVER need to worry about firing corrosive ammo. Your supposed to clean your firearm after firing it anyway so just clean it and not let it get exposed to any moisture and youll be ok. I fire corrosive all the time in my Mosin Nagant and its great with 0 rust. Use Hopps #9 corrosive ammo cleaner at Walmart for less than $3 and your good to go.

Okay well he's got 15 rd boxes with Russian, yes it appears to be Cyrillic Script on it, for $6.19 a box. Is that a good deal?

Wow guys I was a bit off...I went back in to look again. It's a Yugo 24/47.

And ummm she followed me home and is in the kitchen right now leaning up against the wall. She's absolutely gorgeous except for one little crack on the handguard that has been repaired. I don't know when. Maybe 50 years ago perhaps. The barrel is tight(Muzzle Test for details ask).

Right now my hands smell of her perfume(Cosmoline) and I'm gonna make wifey take pics of me and her together when she gets home.

Not the CZ I wanted, but well I'll talk later, Imma go work that action again. Just working that action is addicting. Going to shoot her next week and make a youtube of it.

P.S.- Try as I might info on the history of the Yugo 24/47 is conflicting on the net. Anybody know the straight scoop? Let's hear it.
 
The Yugo 24/47 mausers were FN pattern long mausers that were modernized after ww2 to more "karbine" specs like the K98, M48, VZ24, ect.

I have two Czech 98/22 long mausers and they are buttery smooth.

Yah she's really smooth despite having a rough to operate safety. Do you think this is because the bolt is quite possibly filled with cosmoline. Do I need to clean this gun completely of cosmoline before I fire it?

I'm ready to shoot.

Is there anything I should be on the lookout before shooting a milsurp? The dealer says this gun is ready.

And if anyone knows where to get a replacement handguard lemme know. This one is cracked and repaired but I want one that is cherry otherwise I feel this gun would be considered "best". I talked the guy down to $200. I think I got a fair deal not a super good deal. But hey a local business....you know. I coulda shopped around but my heart and mind were set on this one. That action.....so smooth....

The dealer was fair he tried to talk me into a really cherry MN but I couldn't let go of this mauser. I've always been jealous of the mauser guys. Now for 200 hundred bucks I'm in the Mauser world. This is a very fun place to be for the money!

*And to be fair the dealer tried to talk me into the Mosin because it was basically flawless and only $109. He didn't want me to fill like I was getting burned because he noticed how bad the handguard crack bothered me and the fact that the safety was tough to operate on the Yugo. Plus he felt bad for telling me it was a Czech when it was in fact a Yugo.

My BIL who is about to turn 16 is so excited to go shooting with me too...His sister(a vegan) says we cain't kill anything but I bet we will kill off many fine afternoons shooting steel animals at 300m.

Only things to check out is really the bolts for cracks and it should have been headspaced if its a recent import, otherwise its a good idea to have that checked.

I wont buy a mil surp with a nasty bore if I can help it since they are a pain to clean.
 
Well I shot 30 rounds today. That was a hoot! Wow I had two kinds of surplus ammo. Romanian and Yugoslavian from the 50's. Goodness Gracious that steel cased Romanian stuff kicked like a mule! Wow! I'm gonna avoid that stuff I think that particular ammo was made for MG42 machine guns.

Nice groups at 50m. Pretty much dead on. Didn't even have to shoot low as I had expected. Bet she'll shoot real nice at 200m next time I go.

I'm thinking I'm gonna get an AR15 though. My buddies AR that we brought along was so well-mannered and easy shooting. This old Yugo Mauser kicked like a beast. Not really enjoyable. Giant flame balls too! I made a video and later on I'll get around to posting it.
 
carefull with the surplus ammo. I bought 1000 rounds of yugo stuff and alot of it was cracked, inspect each round.

Well Yah I only bought a 15rd box of each. The Yugo ammo was top notch IMO. The Romanian steel case stuff...imma pass on that stuff next time. It hurt. Never thought I'd turn out to be recoil sensitive.

I saw somewhere on the internets where some surplus 8mm was putting out 2800 fps while others were putting out 2400 fps. There was a big difference in the two today. You do the math. Actually my dealer is gonna get me some non-corrosive but I don't think I'm gonna shoot this gun much anyways.

I think my next gun is gonna be a .22lr! I'm a bit recoil shy as of today.

Edit: And Umm Yah as of today I have new found respect the soldiers of WWII. Well the soldiers of any war for that matter. I could not imagine firing a battle rifle repeatedly during a Russian winter or fighting in a African desert with these mule kickers that they had on hand. I barely made it through 30 rds today!

If anything apon reflection...I can finally understand why the M16 fires such a lil' bitty round. I kinda get it now...

You can also carry twice as many rounds for the same weight.

Very true! Alas I caught myself eyeballing a Hungarian Mosin today...

I'm very hardheaded and cheap! I hope I can hold out for an AR. Been wanting one for so many years...
