I can make this style of bypass valve open by pushing (hard) with my finger. Remember that most of the PureONEs have the bypass set to 14 ~ 16 psi. If that bypass valve is ~1" in dia, then that means it would take ~11 lbs of force to make it open.

I had cut open a used PL14476 PureONE for my 05 Corolla a while back. While I was toying with the filter I wanted to test the bypass valve to see if it would even open (my car does see sub zero temps in the winter). Because the leaf spring looked very stiff. I couldn't even get the bypass valve to budge with my fingers. So used a screw driver to push down on the center. Eventually I pushed downwards with both hand on the screw driver with my body weight behind it (a lot more than 11 lbs of force). The leaf spring had no elasticity and basically deformed the spring. So the valve stayed open.

I wish someone could prove or disprove what I'm saying. Because you can't really tell from just looking the picture alone.

Jim Allen... if you still have this filter around would you mind testing the bypass valve for us?

The design of the bypass valve in the Purolators isn't such that it's going to open a huge amount. It takes 14 PSI just to make it start to crack open. Another 2~4 PSI might make it open maybe 1/8" max. The spring design is such that the valve isn't going to open 1/2"+ ... you over stressed it, that's why it deformed and stayed open.

No better than a Wix, Motorcraft, RP, K&N or Amsoil.
I'd call that some fairly good average construction company. And at generally half the price or < all of those (MC excepted which doesn't have the same efficiency), that makes it the value leader of the bunch.

Again, bang for the buck.

Hard plastic to hard plastic, or hard plastic to metal seal isn't any better than metal to metal seal IMO.

I agree. That is why I keep hoping to run across an Ecore that will fit on my truck. Enough of this dome end bypass junk. May have to cough up for a Wix or a Hastings.

Anyway, go easy on me! I purchased and cut apart a perfectly good filter just for you (well, not exactly but I'll try to take the credit that way).

My local K-Mart had them on sale, so I stocked up for myself and decided to "sacrifice" one on the alter of the greater good.

People are not going to take it easy on you because you called the "almighty" pureone average.

I would agree with that.

Half the price of a Wix??

OK, generally < the Wix at Amazon or Adavance Auto with the $10 coopin on a $25 purchase ~4 P1. And lets not forget P1's 99.9% efficiency, what's Wix's?

You got me, not half the Wix. Point still made, ~half the price or < the others listed. All things considered including efficiency, still best bang for the buck.

Yeah, I've got no quarrels with P1. It's a good filter and I used to use the blue cans for years. After seeing them cut open and feeling the parts, it isn't in the same league with construction as some other brands. Mobil 1 is much heavier and Wix looks better constructed with the coil spacer, rather than a leaf spring. P1 has great filtration, but I wish they'd put that filtration in a better can and design. I'd pay twice the price if they did.

I havent seen a string around the media one the PureONE's for some time now.

I think they have just made a decision on the price point and what they are willing to save on, (the can for one) and what they are not (filtration efficiency). That said, In my ~40 years of changing my own oil, I have never had a can collapse, explode or distort.

But, I hear yah, Wix would be my next choice if I couldn't get P1 at the great value they are. I'm just not willing to pay a premium for the goodies of M1, RP, or Amsoil, all fine filters I'm sure.

Nah, though it appears they are using it less than in the past, based on this recent P1 v BDP comparison, they must still use it for assembly on larger filters as shown below. Likely they could remove it after assembly but don't see a need. https://bobistheoilguy.com/forums/posts/1810989/

Hmmm now doing a search i found a post showing a yellow PL30001 and it did not have the string,i know it's not a problem just wondering.

I'd take a Wix over the P1. The P1 just looks to be an average filter and is priced rather high for the construction. The obnoxious yellow paint screams cheep to me. But that's just me.

I'll go for the mustard yellow sucks slant. That original blue was soooooo cool. As far as a choice between it and a WIX? It's almost a toss up. While I've retreated from the need to get the maximum in fine filtration (minimum

), it could be a "well, while you're there" type thing.

I would take either to 15k if 15k was within a year.
