It's hardly a secret that many, if not all, Motorcraft oil filters are manufactured by Purolator. It's also easily verified that many/most Motorcrafts have the bypass valve in a different location than their PureONE cousins. There seemed to be conflicting reports, however, on whether or not the Motorcraft filters contained the same media as the PureONE's.

I emailed Purolator's tech support with just that question. I asked specifically about the PL30001 and equivalents.

The short answer is that the filtration media in the PureONE and Motorcraft filters are NOT identical. The longer answer is this:
quote:

The Purolator Premium, PureOne and the Motorcraft media are different in
construction. The Premium media is cellulose based with resin reinforcement.

The PureOne and Motorcraft media are cellulose based media with synthetic
and resin reinforcement. The properties of Motorcraft is different from that
of PureOne due to difference in composition/amount of cellulose and
synthetic fiber contents.

The Motorcraft media is not provided by Ford, they only specify the filter
performance requirements.

Here are some basic comparative properties on flat sheets of Premium and
PureOne media. We are not authorized to provide information on Motorcraft
media. Please contact Ford dealer or Engineering regarding this.
code:

Premium PureOne

Media capacity (per sq. in): .085mg .044mg

Efficiency (@25 microns): 97.4% 99.7%

I've asked a couple of followup questions. I'm not familiar with the "media capacity" (although I can guess), and I asked if that efficiency data was single-pass or multi-pass.

Also if you could, ask if the the testing was performed in air or liquid or if there is an ISO or SAE test # they could provide. Many liquid filter media's are specified in dry testing conditions because it's easy to perform at time of manufacure and incoming inspection.

The capacity is the dirt holding capablity before you begin to see plugging and particle counts downstream increase.

I emailed them and asked them to specify what particle sizes provide Beta ratio's of 100 and 200 for the Pure One filters but haven't heard from them, that was a month ago. Beta 100 is 99% and 200 is 99.9%

Wow usually you don't get alot out of these people. Not the typical copy and paste, like the Fram responses.

My Opnion, if you have a Ford, go with the Motorcraft, anything else do Pure one.

What if Motorcraft fits on your vehicles, even if they are not ford? I can put a FL-400S on two of my vehicles, neither ford.

If your car uses a Ford application(which are the only easy ones to find), Go for it. I haven't cut one up, because they don't have my Application. But the Motorcraft looks like a very good filte. And for the same price as a regular Purolator, it's a great value.

I use FL400s motorcraft which are made by Purolator and they do look like they have the Purone paper inside. Have opened up regular Purolators and Purone's of the same part # and both have the bypass at the far end with the FL400s having it at the theaded end. Have also opened a Pep Boys 'Prolone' with it being identical to the Purolator in paper and bypass, but the "PowerFlo" brand ($2.00each) made also by Purolator was identical to the Motorcraft inside using the same bypass at the treaded end but the paper looking like the regular Purolator paper, not the Purone type.
