I cannot wrap my head around why a filter would fail in such a manner. I'd want to see pix and a date code. I'm not saying the OP is fibbing, but I just find it hard to believe. Allow me to be very clear; I'm not calling him a liar. What I'm saying is I'm the kind of guy that wants to see some form of tangible proof; that's what kills my curiousity cat ...

Especially since I ran a WCOD (Puro classic) for 10k miles on my wife's van and had zero issues; when I cut it open it was so normal that I just threw it away and never gave it a second thought. I ran a MC FL400S (made by Puro) for 15k miles on the very next O/FCI, cut it open, and again saw nothing bad at all (pics are documented here from some time back for the nay-sayers to ponder).

I'm not saying the filter didn't fail as the OP described; I just find it hard to understand how such a WIDE, VAST difference in experiences can happen.

Is it possible that counterfiet Classics are getting into the mainstream supply?

Maybe counterfeit. BMW noted a couple of years ago that the Chinese-made counterfeit Manns out there would crumble. Slide over to the 2:40 time point in the youtube video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0Cx2cJSCSmw to see it crumble, compared to a genuine Mann which didn't crumble. The rest of the video is kind of nice, showing microscope views of the media in the BMW lab, showing differences.

My guess is that Purolator didn't treat the paper cellulose media to enough resin, or what resin that was there in the past, had dissolved out of the fibers.

Could be. I can see it now ... the blame for the media tearing issue will be due to "counterfeit" filters.

Even though Purolator has been send dozens of filters for tear inspection, they have never said once that they received a counterfeit Purolator filter.

Maybe this is the first report of "crumbling media" with more to follow ... time will tell.

Notice what I said back in May 2011 when I reported this Purolator Classic that I found with media tears like the now very common recurring tears recently reported.

Classic Media Tear in May 2011

Quote:
The media seemed too "brittle" and I could make it tear easily by simply just pushing the pleats sideways when spreading the pleats apart for debris inspection.

is it okay to use a filter with rust on it?
my purolators got wet and now they developed rust!

can i still use it or is it bad and dangerous?

If you think that's bad op, I took a purolator off my car and it disintegrated and vanished in my cute little hands.

Then my car vanished. They need to seriously fix these problems.

I would not use those rusty filters. Cut 'em open for fun.

These issues with Purolator are nothing new. Five years ago I wrote to Mann-Hummel about a filter that I had bought for a Ford Escort. The Mann filter was simply a relabeled Purolator and I wrote to ask why.

This initial e-mail started a relationship with one of the executives at Mann-Hummel working with the Bosch/Mann/Purolator merger/cash infusion deal that was taking place at the time. So I took the opportunity to send pictures of the numerous failed Purolator filters that I had personal experience with.

My contact at Mann noted that these failures were not favorable and that they would be looked into. Keep in mind that this was five years ago!! Throughout our dialogue it became known that I preferred Mann-Hummel products for my European vehicles (VW and BMW) but was very disappointed in the idea of 'badge engineered' filters. The whole relabelling thing was an effort for Mann and Bosch to gain in-roads into the North American market.

The only positive action that came from my efforts was that I was sent two entire filter packages for my then-new VW Jetta. I was give oil filters, air filters, cabin air filters and fuel filters - enough to last me several years.

My contact was later transferred to Russia to work in their market and today has left the Mann-Hummel company and has moved back to Munich where he works for another automotive supplier.

So this whole Purolator issue is nothing new and unfortunately the company has no intention of improving their quality. The filters sell and return a sizeable profit to the company and it's a product in which the quality is practically impossible to verify so they have no desire to change.

For me, the last filter I will ever choose for anything I own will be a Fayetteville, NC, produced Purolator (to include relabeled MANN). I think that jeopardizing their reputation (regarding Mann-Hummel) is the dumbest thing in the world that a company could ever do.

I see a connection between speaking up about Purolator problems and being sent to Siberia to work. All future executives at Mann have learned from this example. Its good to see he escaped the work camp in Siberia and made it back to Munich!

Seriously why can't they just make the filter media paper thicker for more strength? If I worked for Purolator I'd be on this this Trans-Siberian Railway now for just implying that:

Its a cool train, at least our Mann contact executive got to ride on a cool train running 0w-20 and Mann oil filters.

Either that, or Mann-Hummel will make it a goal to get the quality back up ... that's the only smart business decision IMO.

haha, ElastoHydro, I knew that someone would comment on this aspect of my story. Straight out of Hogan's Heroes - to the Russian front you go! Actually, my friend came to the USA to work from the Mexican office. It is apparently common for these executives to be moved around. He is Austrian btw.

And ZeeOSix, you'd think they would have gotten a handle on things in five years. It doesn't appear to have happened.

Why should they change anything? Read the posts on here from Purolator users. They don't care either. If their customer base is fine with their products, they will just keep selling them.

I'd imagine the meeting at Purolator went something like this:
Why should we spend money to fix this?
People don't cut their filters open and look.
Few if any engines have come apart due to this.
Action Item: Increase advertising budget to counter bad publicity.
Meeting adjourned.

Short memory of what? All those documented Fram failures I forgot about?

I've done my investigation for these so called mass repetitive failures you claim have happened over the last 10 years. The result was no smoking gun showing what you claim is true in any threads or photos to back anything up. If you think it's true, then prove it ... otherwise it's just a foggy misconception you've formed in your head.
