My 1973 Bavaria would definitely cruise at 100 mph- for hours at a time. Back in the dark days of the idiotic 55 mph NMSL I always ran with a CB and my Escort radar detector, so I figured in for a penny, in for a pound…

About hybrid battery life, they typically last 10-15 years and if you are lucky maybe 16-18. I think, if you are in Texas, you would likely save enough gas over that period of time that they pay for itself even if you budget for a new one every 12 years.

The other benefit of a hybrid is your AC can run with the engine only come on to recharge the battery. It was a really great feature compare to idling an engine just to keep the AC on in traffic or waiting for someone.

Toyota's hybrid transmission / eCVT is very reliable, it is the other benefit of going hybrid.

Also… I wouldn’t say I was trying to avoid hybrids, but batteries do have a finite life. If a car is 5-6 years old, that battery’s life is half over. That’s why I wouldn’t do an older used hybrid. My son is actually pushing for a new Prius. There is one base 2025 model at a local dealership which I’ve considered asking about. Though, I can’t possibly be the first person interested. It might be a case of not wanting to budge on sticker price… Toyotas usually sell themselves

I understand the concern on hybrids, and I have never owned one, but I see Priuses going 400 k as taxis and in private service all the time, and their consumer ratings are through the roof. I would take a close look at that 2025. You can’t go wrong wth those things.

Glad you are OK and as an Avalon owner, sorry for your loss. You know how good an Avalon is, if you are worried about the 8 speed why not look at the previous generation with a 6 speed? Mine runs flawlessly. As for the hybrid Camry, my GF's daughter just leased a new one.
I haven't ridden in it yet but I've heard nothing but great reviews. However, what she didn't realize was that it's a little more expensive to insure a hybrid. YMMV.

I think going from an Avalon to something smaller will be a disappointment for you. Keep that in mind.
