crash test of the vw buses

I had several VW buses, back when I was 10 feet tall and immortal. Much hoonage committed with 40 HP. They were very common but I can't remember seeing badly wrecked ones. You paid attention and avoided situations before they arose.

How about the Canter or Nissan Cabstar?

So how do you feel about motorcycles?

I feel I should darn well drive what I like. PROVIDING my choice of vehicle does not unduly endanger others.

Agreed, as long as I, the taxpayer, don't have to foot the bill for your medical/disability expenses.

I see your point.

I think smoking, Drinking alochol, Drug abusers, Sking, riding bicycles, climbing ladders (without certification) and a whole list of sports activities should exempt injured victims from medical coverage also.

Actually I have a much longer list, but these few would do for a start.

Where do you draw your line?

They are trucks, not vans. Mitsubishi L300, Mazda Bongo, Nissan Vanette, Nissan Caravan, these are all forward control vans. I'm doing a cambelt on an L300 today.

The problem isn't with the vehicles, it's with the idea that government is responsible to take care of you should an accident or injury occur.

I can't get much more into that without breaking the discussion rules here.

They are legally vans here if the max gross weight is under 3501 kg.

Not what's I'd call a van. We have a Canter at work with a small crane on it - unloaded you can drive it with a car license, with a decent load you need a truck license.

looks like a 6 ton?

Anyway, the cab isn't higher or has any more crumple zone space than a Vanette. How does the driver fare in a crash, I bet it's not that much different from the Vanette/Hi Ace.

I've had one in last year that was involved in a crash with a Passat. The Passat driver was dead, the Canter driver had broken toes and got a very hefty shake up. Though the Passat driver might have died before the crash as he swerved across 3 lanes without apparent reason. The canter was a write off, cabin was twisted properly, the chassis was anything but straight...

Let's put it another way - light vans are unibody, the Canter has a full chassis. I saw a prang between a motorcycle and a Nissan C20...the bike rode away undamaged, the C20 had the driver's floor pushed up and you couldn't opperate the pedals.

Iveco daily is a truck then or a light van? It has a full chassis but looks like a unibody.

and then theres the renault master, using lots of iveco parts for thebody, but it's a unibody fwd...

Front engine, which is the way they are all going now, not forward control sitting on the engine like a Hi Ace.

With a canter you sit on the engine like a hi ace, yet it's full chassis like a Daily. Is it the cab tilt that makes it a truck then? GVWR is the same for all 3 above

It's the cab that makes it a truck. There are pickup versions of forward control vans of course, but they are adapted from the vans, not a van body built onto a cab only.
