Could a Filter Implode Under Stress?

I will try to get some pics up because I know every one likes photos, but I used a Bosch Filtech 3312 on my new Sonata for about 2 weeks. I wanted to see if other filters would do OK even though Sonata filters have incredible flow rates. The OEM has so many holes compared to the Bosch or most any after market for that matter, the car starts making noise if I don't use OEM. I knew I should get the OEM's.

To the story...I got the OEM filters yesterday put one on today. I look at the bosch and I see a big dent, I though a rock must have hit it. I look closer and see no marks in the paint and I start thinking "could this be caused by over-suction"? I cut the filter open and the pleats were a little wavy (especially for 182 miles). Has anyone heard of this phenomenon? My Sonata's noise had instantly gone away after I put the OEM on.I have never seen this before.

Since filter work in a positive flow regime, and have a bypass, I just don't see how this is possible; bursting from too much stress? Possible, though really unlikely. Imploding? I don't see how it's possible.

As far as flow, I'm not questioning whether or not the OEM filter flows better, but the limiting factor of flow is the media, not the holes in the baseplate or the center tube. This has been discussed in a looong thread on here before, so I'm not gonna re-invent the wheel. Suffice to say, the media is the determinant of flow rate.

As was said above by JOD, there is only positive pressure in the filter ... there is no way there could be suction (ie, less than ATM pressure) inside the filter can.

Where was this dent ... on the side or end? Maybe it "oil canned" for some reason from the heat cycles.

Their oem filters efficiency numbers are less than desirable, they have been posted several times here.
 
The filter can will flex at every start up.

It might have been possible the can had a dent to begin with and you didn't notice it. But let's assume you looked the can over before installing. There is the potential for metal fatigue but that is super extremely rare. Could there have been an interference within engine bay and frame rail? Something which the filter banged into when you were driving around and going over speed bumps for instance. ( Don't laugh GM had a problem with this on Cadillacs and filter cans were scraping on the pavement until they shortened the can)

However, it is a head scratcher why your can was dented within 182 miles without more information to digest.
 
I swear it it a head scratcher, I inspected the filter well before I put it on so I know it wasn't dented beforehand. The strength of the OEM shell versus the regular Bosch 3312 is significant. By all that meets the eye the Hyundai OEM is a beautiful filter. Metal end caps lots of filtering media. I will gladly just stick with the OEM regardless of the particle count (Glum) posted.

Here's a challenge..:D

Use another Bosch filter and see if it dents in the same area.


Now chances are it won't. Which is why the can that did dent does become a head scratcher.

It could happen from road debri. Rare but does happen. Or it could be happening due to something within the engine bay causing the problem.

THe GM problem happened because the filter became the lowest point of the engine over speed bumps and driveways. The springs would do their job but the filter went below the frame rail and scraped the ground. Every brand of filter had the problem of scraping the bottom of the can. In some instances the metal was worn through and the filter leaked.

Now there are reasons why not to use larger filters within the engine. And interference can be an issue. Again, I doubt this is the problem for you.

btw..where is the dent located on the shell?

So was this Bosch 3312 larger than the OEM filter?

Yeah those Hyundai filters are built like a tank, I was surprised when I got my Elantra how heavy the filter was.
