I typically check the ATF level in my 2007 Civic LX by driving for about 15 minutes, shutting the engine off and then checking the dipstick about one minute later. The level is almost exactly even with the full mark on the dipstick when I follow these steps. This is verbatim how Honda says to check the ATF level.
The vehicle came from the factory with the transmission overfilled by ~1/4 quart. I am wondering if this was done to allow the transmission to maintain adequate fluid circulation as it reaches operating temperature? The ATF level increases as it heats up, which leaves me wondering if Honda overfilled the transmission to allow for better circulation during the first few minutes of operation each day?
Should I overfill the transmission by 1/4 quart to mirror what Honda did at the factory?
