The perp is still alive and well, serving out his prison sentence. The point is - I can see needing to fire multiple shots to stop a given threat... The count, while seemingly high, is believable if all the cops made the decision at or about the same time. Each firing multiple shots and evaluating the need for more. Maybe some hard facts will come out later and shed some more light on exactly what the shot count was and why they fired as they did.

On the comparisons of Marines doing better, maybe one of our LEO members can confirm, but I'd imagine that they (Marines) have more training of various forms and intensities?

This is very true - you fire until the threat is stopped. How many rounds is that? Might be several good shots to the center mass...that's why the high-capacity autos have become standard issue for police departments.

There was an FBI shootout in Miami in the 80s - the perps were strong, young, former army, wearing winter clothes. They took several rounds of 9mm and .357 to the head, to the chest and body, they were bleeding, they were wounded, but still firing - still lethal and took out 2 agents during the shootout in which over 145 rounds were exchanged.

Forensic analysis on that event led to the development of the FBI 10mm round - which proved to be too hot for some agents, so it was shortened, and the .40 S&W was created, but that's another story...

Multiple rounds on target and the perps were still firing...that's why you fire, on target, until the threat stops.

Personal approach is two to the center, one to the head, sights back on center, repeat until threat is down/stopped...might empty the whole magazine before I see threat stopped...might reload and keep firing...depends on the THREAT.

Folks don't understand - you can be shot, but you don't always die or stop moving instantly. Even people with fatal gunshot wounds (major organs/blood vessels) can still be firing at you, still standing, still wielding a weapon...they won't live long, but they still present the same threat...there have been plenty of Texas Border Patrol (I'm thinking of Bill Jordan..."No Second Place Winner"...great book) and other LE who have taken a round in a gunfight, returned fire, killed their assailant and lived to tell about it.

Good thing for those officers that their assailants didn't have LE training (shoot until the threat is stopped)...good thing, for them, that their assailants had a Hollywood approach - "I shot him, I won".

You are now being completely ridiculous in an attempt to justify this shooting. You continue to use examples which have absolutely nothing to do with the situation at hand. You're as off-base as those with whom you're arguing, even though you're doing it with better grammar...

This guy didn't have a gun. He wasn't shooting back. He wasn't shooting anything. You seem bent on obfuscating the facts of this case (which are more clear than you'd like to admit) in an attempt to convince either others or yourself that this was an appropriate response.

BTW, I'm all for finding out all of the facts in the case, but the biggest issue is that there doesn't appear to be much transparency in the investigation (at least that I've been able to see). When you have government entities investigating themselves, releasing limited information and then saying "it's OK", it's not surprising that people have questions.

Hold on JOD...completely ridiculous? Where? I explained a bit more about combat, to clear up what were a few obviously held misconceptions that came up in this thread. Clearly, I wasn't talking about this case per se, I was talking about other topics that have come up in the thread.

In no way did I take sides, render judgment, justify or condemn the actions of the officers in this "hobo"
shooting. Where was that in my post?

Unless you deliberately misconstrued the antecedent for officers (it should have been clear that I was talking about the officers in the other cases that I discussed, like the 1986 Miami shoot out), it was crystal clear that my discussion was about gunfights, not this "hobo" shooting...

My intent all along has been to educate in this thread - there are so very many folks with preconceptions and misconceptions about lethal force, rules on the use of force, how people perform in actual stress/combat situations, that I felt it worth discussing other cases as illustrations of the points I have been making: threat triangle, assessment of the threat, "shoot" decision, shot placement, shot assessment, and performance in combat. These are things that have to be understood before you can begin to legitimately discuss shooting.

I tried once to explain Physics 101 on a BITOG thread...it was an exercise in futility...and this thread is taking on the same futility, since folks, like you, want to interpret my attempts at education as taking sides or arguing. I am glad that you appreciate the grammar - I have been trying to be both clear and logical, though I have obviously failed if I was interpreted as being argumentative and partisan.

I have not, in any of these posts, taken sides, so there really is no arguing about this case on my part...I have pleaded since the first thread for people to reserve judgement - that is still the right thing to do in this case until all the facts are known.

Depending on ROE, the Marines would have shot him dead, most likely, but it would have been fewer rounds. This goes back to my point about training...our Marines are among the best trained people of any profession...
My point stated the Marines were unarmed. A knife is a simple thing for an infantry Marine to disarm.

"A knife is a simple thing for an infantry Marine to disarm." - really? Where did you get this from?

Marines are trained to deal with a knife if they have to in close combat, but they know what a knife represents: lethal weapon. The smart Marines, the well-trained ones, will tell you that the best way to deal with an enemy armed with a knife is at range with his M-4...you can block knife attacks, but a well-trained guy with a knife is a serious threat at close range...there is no reason for a Marine to get close enough for an enemy with a knife to injure/kill that Marine or the members of his company...

So during a life or death situation you might fire 10 rounds even though 4 or 5 would do the job. Since you have multiple Officers thats where you have 46 rounds. A taser? Not on your life! I'm not getting close enough to you to deploy a taser if you are holding a knife. Sometimes the taser barbs dont stick and if that heppens i'm toast. You can judge what happens all you want, and it is your right as an American. But understand that you don't know what your talking about until you lace up my boots and do my job. I will always come home to my family. At the end of every encounter i'd rather be tried by 12 than carried by 6!

+1 amen brother, dont judge me untill you do our job.

Similar to people who downgrade our military men in harms way. Until someone is shooting at you, launching RPGs, throwing grenades and so on, YOU AINT GOTTA CLUE. Armchair quarterbacks are a dime a dozen and aren't worth much. imho

another +1 great point !

BEFORE he was surrounded completely this idiot could have injured other citizens. I personally would have not given him the amount of time those officers did, they should be honored for their patience.

Again the perp, Milton stated that someone was going to die that day it was him or the officers.

When you are ordered to put down a knife by police officers you either comply or die.

The guy got what he was asking for.

The side benefit is that he can't threaten any other innocent people ever again. One less
threat to other citizens is a good day too.

Then he should of complied and dropped the knife.

"Slaughter the cows humanely"

What difference does it make? The cow is going to get killed and eaten no matter what. Why all this pretentious method of humanely killing when we cannot humanely kill a human.

Sorry folks. I do not buy the story that the police officers fired for their safety.

Your "What if" scenarios are incredibly hilarious.

They are only limited by your imagination.

according to your "what if" scenarios, thugs in a speeding vehicle should be blown up with a bazooka because what if the perp hits a car kills a family of 4? what if he runs over the sidewalk and kills children playing by the side? What if the perp rams into a house and kills the family eating dinner?
what if???

Please. Please do not tell us that we do not know your job until we do it. you are doing nothing short of insulting the intelligence of the citizens of this country by doing so.

IIRC, speeding/dangerous/thug piloted vehicles have been taken out by a .50 BMG round to the engine actually. Not quite a bazooka, but then utilization of a bazooka could cause shrapnel that could maim people relative to the incident over a rather broad radius.

Your analogy is akin to these cops throwing hand grenades at the perp, rather than firing at him with their guns.

The bazooka scenario has no weight, being that police don't have them. Guess he watched the pilot episode of Sledge Hammer.

But they would do the PIT maneuver or use spike strips.

We've pased ridiculous on the way to fantasy.

Almost 50 rounds were fired. 11 hits.
Where did the rest go? Ever wondered?

I am not going to reveal my line of work. Sorry.
If you can't understand my viewpoint, I guess that is expected?

I have said before, and saying it again.

DO NOT simply side with your law enforcement brethren simply because of your fraternal urge to do so.

Think clearly about this situation on it's own merit and then respond.

I have never in this entire thread painted a sad picture of the entire police force of this country. Just the cops involved in this situation. In addition, I have also provided evidence that hints at something more as going on than what meets the eye, esp when all dash cams and lapel mic fail at the same time. Only people that do not care fail to see that, or ignore that piece of information. Or maybe those who are brainwashed by folks like you.

Do you need 46 rounds to hit him too?

Im drawing pictures of a short, fat, balding 30's something guy working in the basement of some Business in the 8x10 closet they call the "IT" department.. probably not married, probably never had a girlfriend.. sitting at his little desk.. combing his greasy hair over that big bald spot.. pushing up his taped up black 60's style glasses furiously debating on BITOG about cops.. Jealous.. that he never had the sack, or the physical abilitys to step up and do something important or honerable.. just fighting little battles from that closet.. Before you go home tonight, get that foil hat out of your desk drawer and take it with you.. there watching you.. always watching you...
crackmeup2.gif

Pathetic....

and ive watched the video.. those cops should be given honors for being so calm and waiting so long.. they did nothing wrong..

and frankly im not going to post on this particular thread anymore. Nobody can win this conversation..

Done.
