Cooper Tires for 97 F-150

Fleet Farm has Cooper tires on a buy 3 get 1 free sale. I am looking at the Cooper Discoverer ATR (50,000 more aggressive) and the Discoverer CTS (70,000 little less agressive SUV tire). Both are the same price for 265/70/17 at $159.00

Anyone have any experience with these? I have read good reviews on both. I don't do much off roading and was thinking the CTS would give a better ride and longer treadlife and still have enough grip for snow and ice. Any thoughts
 
Money being the same, I'd go with the CTS. With a 50,000 mile rating on the ATR, it may not last past 40,000 miles.

Dad has a set of the ATR's on his work truck. Someone else picked them out for him. They're nothing special.

Do they have decent traction in snow? That is my main concern here in MN. Other than the occasional muddy field driveway or forest road and some ice fishing on the frozen lakes I don't do much off-roading. I like the 70K mile warranty and I think they will ride a lot nicer on the road since that is what 90% of my driving is.

Yep 4x4. But as I said my offroading is pretty light (ice fishing, forest roads, and field driveways during hunting season)

Tell us what tire do you have now, and how they have performed in your opinion.


I wouldn't think with having 4 wheel drive, that you're going to exceed the capabilities of the CTS, with how you're going to be using them.

If you had a 2 wheel drive truck, like I do, then I'd suggest something a little more aggressive.

If it helps, Cooper offers a "45 day road test" on the CTS tires.
 
I have Bridgestone Dueler AT 693. They never had the greatest traction on I only got about 39,000 miles from them. There is little tread left at all on them. The truck had Cooper Discoverer HT tires on it when I bought it. They are more of a highway tire and I thought they had just as good traction as the Bridgestones.
 
I saw the 45 day road test. I just wish I could do that in the winter to test them out them. I am getting the control arms, ball joints, tie rod end, and alignment done at the same time. There goes a bunch of money, but it is cheaper than payments on a new vehicle.

The salesman said that the CTS isn't going to get you stuck and the ATR isn't going to get you out if you get stuck. I kind of agree with him and am leaning toward the CTS. The CTS is supposed to have a silicon impregnated rubber that is good on ice and snow.

Wow. That Bridgestone only has a "B" UTQG traction rating, instead of an "A" (as both Coopers have).

I know what you mean about payments. My truck was in a wreck last December, right before I was able to pay it off. I had a kid in a Jeep try to run over me, as I was stopped trying to make a left hand turn. The repairs were within a $1000 of totaling it out.

Now, I get to drive a wrecked and repaired truck... but it is paid off.

Heh heh.... that's one way of putting it...

Sure, the ATR is a more aggressive tire. The question is... how much more?

It's funny I read that, my post was going to be along the same lines....I just find the CTS is just a better everyday tire..
 
My dad and BIL both use the ATR's and like them, especially the snow traction. They both have 4wd 2500 Silverados. My dad did try the H/T tires once and didn't like them as much in the winter. Hopefully the CTS's work well for you.
 
I think they will be fine. There isn't a lot of difference in tread pattern other than the shoulder area.
