I know I was just thinking 18mpg sounds good! My Chevy only delivers about 15, I'd be pretty happy with 18.

I think the 2007-2009 are pretty reliable. My 2008 V6 has been great. Approx 28 on the highway at 65-70. check out the Technical Service Bulletins on the 2010-2012s. The Front wheel drive does pretty decent, but I wouldn't expect it or AWD to be great in heavy snow because the ground clearance is pretty low. The oil is super easy to change on these by the way(with 3.0)

If you are well off, Go buy the Fusion.
Stop driving the truck for a while.

If you miss the truck, sell off the fusion.

If you don't.....

Trying to lower my expenses so I can save up for a larger down payment on a house eventually.

I assumed incorrectly that you were a homeowner. By all means, being an apartment dweller, you most certainly don't need a pickup. On the very rare occasion you need to haul something there's always a rental.

If I were living in an apartment I'd have a car rather than a pickup. Assuming the numbers work and you don't take a huge depreciation hit (and you can afford to pay cash) then trading the pickup may make sense-although it may take 3-4 years to make up the difference in fuel savings.

Yes, i went from a pickup to a car.. If you use your truck often (as a truck, cargo in the bed) but still need to commute.. trade off the new truck, get your Fusion.. then buy yourself a 15 year old $3,000 weekend truck.. use the truck when you need to, plates and insurance should be little to nothing.

I think of that day for me, sometimes. It would be a sad day when I have to give up my truck. But, it's paid off, doesn't eat much, and I am a homeowner and motorcycle owner. I have a trailer that has come in real handy.

But, trucks can be rented when needed. A trailer hitch would increase the utility of a car when a trailer is needed. Friends with trucks (or an extra car) can be begged. Life style changes and ways of looking at the world can be altered.

If anything is paid off, that's a plus. If you're still making payments it's simply switching one to the other. An extra vehicle costs in insurance and tax/licensing that adds up when you don't really use it during the year. We keep mine for the heavy snow days and home stuff, but seldom need it. But when somebody needs pulled out or rescued, it's done RIGHT NOW and we all drive away happy.

Personally, I got a small car for cheap that I used for commuting. That was the CRX for $850. It turned out well and we got a new one with even better mileage - the Prius C. I get about 54mpg on average, and that sure beats my 10mpg truck!

Snow tires on extra rims would be a good idea, but deep snow would still stop you. Fortunately, there's no shortage of truck people driving around that will pull you out (like me.) Keep a hook and chain/rope with you for your application and you should be good to go with that.

Good luck on your quest for simplicity.

What happens when you need to buy a sheet of plywood, couch, mattress, etc.? I would keep the truck. I love my car, but I actually would rather have a truck or another SUV. My Jeep gets as good as MPG in town as my car (but I have 3.5). I'm always buying stuff for the house, etc., and often wish I had a truck.

The Fusion is a great car, and a good commuter. It would be a tough decision. You could always buy a set of winter tires for it. Like others have said, if you buy the 2010+, you get the (not-so-good) 6spd transmission. Buy a Sport, and you get the Aisin. I wouldn't buy older than '10 Fusion. That would be too big of a step backwards from your truck. I don't think you'd be happy. The first gens were great cars also, but they are dated now (interior and exterior).

PS. I went from a '07 Fusion to '08 Sport Trac, and now have '10 MKZ. I miss the Sport Trac the most.

3 weeks now, I went from a truck to a car and I don't regret it .If I wanted to haul anything,I'll rent a box truck for $25-30 which is more economical to me regarding the car saves me a little over $1000 at the pump over a period of one year.

I don't really understand the truck thing. I drive a truck because I need one for work, but when I'm not working I can't get out of it fast enough.

IMHO trucks ride like [censored], burn a lot of fuel, and are hard to park. I don't understand why someone would buy a truck just to drive around in, but I'm not an SUV person either.

^^^That is exactly the way I feel about my trucks!

When you're in one all day long the last thing you want to drive is some lumbering behemoth of a vehicle.
