Considering "New" Impala. Advice?

I remember the couple of times I tried to throw a rod in rental car.....curbs are no issue and whacking it into R random AT positions WOT is indeed boring after 20-30 times.

Avoid rental cars. Unless REALLY cheap.

They've had some issues with the intake manifold gasket, but if you know what to look out for, you'll be fine. Not every car is going to have this leak, most don't. Don't let the engine keep you away from the car. The 3800 is a great engine with great power, but the 3400 is no slacker, either.

Yeah, the 20 HP difference isn't a show-stopper. I was fine a few years back when I had a '93 Olds 98 making 170 HP, and the 3400 in this beasty makes 180 HP...
I was hoping that maybe the stories I'd heard about the GM 60-degree V6 (3.1, 3.4, one other I can't remember...) related to issues that'd been rectified by now.

I'd skip the 3.4 and get a 3.8 if possible. The intake manifold gasket is a bear to replace. You have to basically take apart the whole top end of the inge (rockers included) to get to that leaky gasket.

Overall, the Impala is a nice car. I just think you'd be much better off with the reliable 3.8L.

I have one. '96 Caprice Classic with an LT1 and the FE3 Performance suspension.
To be honest, if I get the Impala I'll miss 102 MPH on the Interstate. I'll miss spinning my rear tires while I'm driving UPHILL at 30 miles an hour in the rain... I'll miss a lot of things.
I won't miss 18 miles per gallon.
I'm considering this because I DON'T work on my own car.. I can't. And because to be honest, I ran the numbers, and in my situation I can save some money by going to the new car.
Also, the ride is TONS better in the '03 Impala than in the '96 Caprice. Now *that* is a little odd, I woulda' thunk the other way around. Then again I do have the performance package in the Caprice.

So do I. Like neutral dropping a Ford Taurus on the Las Vegas strip. And in the parking garage of the Monte Carlo. I still hold the record for most neutral drops in a Ford Taurus on the LV strip in 2004. And dont get me started on the other car I rented later this summer...

If you buy a used rental car its a crapshoot the service dept. can doctor up most any problem but you may get lucky and get a good one. There are many one owners out there you may like better unless its the finance company

you like.So good luck with your choice.

FWIW, I bought a rental Impala. No problems other than the usual set of GM attention to detail items

The price seems good for a car with some warrantee left.

I also have something against destroying and damaging things which do not belong to me.

Guys my wife used to work for Hertz. The employes and hikers are not gentle. I have never done a neutral drop on any rental car. Go to where the cars are loaded onto the transport truck or off loaded from a ship.

I have some FP at home, haven't plugged it into the Caprice. I'm actually meeting EPA estimates in it.
My grandfather actually meets the EPA estimate. In my independent testing with my Caprice, I discovered that I can get EPA mileage by driving like my grandfather.
That means... get on the highway 1 mile from the house. Set the cruise to 55... drive.
I did that TWICE on the way to my mother-in-law's. Any more driving like that makes me batty.
My grandfather has an '01 Impala, and got 33 MPG on his annual migration from West Virginia to Sunny Florida.

The car drove just the same when I returned it. HAHAHAHAHA!!! I paid $40 a day and put a whopping 600 miles on it in a week. For $280, I made the monthly payment on it for them. I had to put a months worth of miles on it. Do you worry about every single abused car out there? Gimme a break.

Yep, here comes the justification...

Keep in mind that a many people have not been able to get anywhere near the EPA figures for fuel economy with the Wimpala. Have you tried FP in the Caprice? Might pick up a bit.

Oh well. Went down to buy it today. Thing sold Friday. I came perilously close to buying an '04 for only $1,000 more, but the deal wound up getting aborted due to a disagreement over the value of my trade-in.
Actually, they never *TOLD* me what they were giving me for my trade-in until the final paperwork was about to be signed... 2 and a half hours after their closing time. I had to interrogate the amount my trade-in was worth out of their financing lady. They had these pre-made forms they were using, and they *completely* masked that part of the equation.
I've bought cars from these people TWICE in the past with issues, so I suspect the problem is disorganization and not malice... but I'm not sure.

Not everyone dogs a rental car. I dont and I dont have a problem buying a former rental car.
If you can get a deal its worth it. Good maintinence and upkeep are done by most rental companies.

Find a different dealer.... and go with the 3.8L. I drove an Impala when my mom's Avalon was in the shop (that's an unfair comparison) and I didn't like it but the 3.8L would probably change my mind.

It's not malice, but definitely a dishonest sales practice. When we bought my wife's Xterra, the first thing the salesman did was disappear for about 15 minutes, then return with a piece of paper with a monthly payment written on it. I instructed him that we wouldn't go any further until we discussed my trade-in value, my downpayment, APR, and the number of months on the loan; and he looked at me like I had just slapped his mother. They sell a lot of cars that way, though. Person next to us was surprised to find out that her tradein was FAR from paid off...

/rant.

A fleet car isn't too bad, if you can get a screaming good deal on it. Most rental cars are rented out to business travelers at the airport for two or three days at a time. They end up getting better service than most privately owned vehicles.

I would avoid that 3.4 though...

Good luck in your search!

Yeah, I feel soooooo glad that I know as much as I do about finance and car buying. I'm the kind of guy who researches everything online and at the library for a few weeks before doing it.
The last two times I bought cars from those guys, there were ZERO shennanigans. That's why this incident dropped my jaw.
My reasons for wanting a new car are very complex, and not really car-related so much as financial. I expect that my credit may get trashed in the next year due to my wife's health. It takes YEARS to fix that, and if I'm driving 18,000 miles per year in a '96 Caprice, I will hit the point where it needs replacement or major repairs before I've fixed my credit. I am trying to avoid buying a car and paying 18.9% APR on the associated loan.
With an '03-'04 vehicle, I will be driving it for a few years more than I will be a '96.
I realize most of you at this point will be biting at the bit to point out the LT1 is a highly reliably powerplant, but I live in Ohio and to be honest, the vehicle has the beginning of automotive body cancer. I'm not really capable of working on my own cars.
Regarding your feelings on the 3.4... yes, I too am EXTREMELY leery of the powerplant.
This here website REALLY scared me:
http://www.gm-v6lemons.com/
I wish the 3.8 would come without the LS package, but it appears that in the real world, 99% of the Impalas with the 3.8 are either cop cars or the LS package.
The LS package seems to push the price up $3-4K. That pushes the payments into "unreasonable" for my current budget.
I've even considered a surplus cop car, but that comes with its own set of hassles.
