Consequence of switching oils, winter vs summer

And yet largely, the crux is/was largely platform agnostic.
I answered the crux of your question in post 37 when I said:

Delo XSP 5w40 and Delo XSP 15w40 are (mostly) the same product in different grades. There wouldn't be any additive conflicts switching back and forth between those two.

Delvac ESP 5w40 and Delvac ESP 15w40 are (mostly) the same product in different grades. There wouldn't be any additive conflicts switching back and forth between those two.

Well, one of the two carries Ford F1 "approval" so there's that obvious difference in chemistry.

I got it. IYO, the addpack is identical so nothingburger. Thanks.

The VOAs tell...a story, which was the crux of my question.

The Ford F1 approval might have nothing to do with additive package. It might have to do with viscosity.

You're a salty fellow, especially for someone asking others for advice, help, input. I'm surprised that other members have been so patient with it (so far). Keep it up and eventually you'll abuse these guys good will one time too many.

No, it means one was tested and passed whereas one may not have been. That's all it really means.

Or it might not. There’s that pesky 1000 ppm phosphorous requirement.

Seeing as plenty of powerstrokes list 5w-40 as recommended and there are some 5w-40s carrying the F1 spec…the viscosity argument doesn’t hold water.

So it’s more than likely an about chemistry.

I’m just questioning your assertion that extreme/esp and Delo 5w/15w are using the same additive chemistry because the uoa/voa doesn’t support it and the F1 spec is an obvious indicator.

I doubt any measurable wear difference is detectable. If you like switching seasonally go for it.

Or

Split the difference with a quality 10W-40 with every approval available. 😂

For your climate the Delo XSP 15w40 should be fine year round. Hard to beat the 3 gallon box for $57.

I typically run the 5w40 in my Cummins because I’ve had (-19) degree Fahrenheit starts in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan when I couldn’t plug in on snow mobile trips.

I have the Delo XSP 15w40 in the truck now, I couldn’t beat the $25 spring rebate on $57 3 gallon box. I’d have no issue running that into December in Michigan, going up North without being able to plug is a bit different.

I don't know that your question was truly answered, and maybe it just really can't be besides anecdotally. My question is mostly the same, but I was wondering if a certain full synthetic 15w40 might be better than its 5w40 brother (same brand) in the fuel dilution and shear stability realm. I've been running 5w40 year round, but I'm wondering if 15w40 for the warmer 6 months of the year might actually be better. However slight that 'better' may be it seems that it would be.

I'm trying to decide if I want to bite the bullet and run used oil analysis to somewhat satisfy my curiosity (if possible).

The whole idea one needs to switch from a 5W to a 15W for Summer is based on nothing science.
If the operative word in your statement is 'needs' then sure. But if you are saying that there is no difference in running an oil that shears more vs an oil that shears less...? I don't think anyone is saying they need to switch to a 15w40 for the summer. And I don't want to speak for the O.P., but for me I was just wondering if it can make a little more sense.

Just like he stated in his first post 6 month oil changes work well for me in one of my vehicles. And running Delvac 15w40 Extreme for the warmer months and Delvac 1 ESP 5w40 for the colder half of the year seems like a good idea. He was more worried about additive packages. I'm more curious if anyone had done it and had any notes to share.
