What's the complaint?

A few months ago they started giving me 3-3.5 hour shifts. Like 6 days a week. Half the time they call me up right before the shift and say it's not busy don't come. Now they got me at one shift less than 4 hours a week.

I guess they're trying hard to make me quit.

The economy is good. Find another job with the rest of your time.

You will get nowhere in HR. Not really an HR decision.

Depends on the company culture, complaint, etc.
In my experience, I have seen "important" people protected.
I am sorry to say, but I don't think HR is your friend either.
Generally they will protect the company.
At least that is my take.
Open door, all opinions are respected, etc. I ain't buying it.

You could ask HR why your hours are short in a non-confrontational manner. Probably better to start with your boss first as they may not realize it's a problem for you. They are trying to save money by trimming hours when you are not needed. Maybe ask to go do different job when not needed to gain more hours.

Just use common sense: Human R-E-S-O-U-R-C-E-S. That is what you are to them - a "resource." Not a thinking, feeling, person - a RESOURCE. So this type stuff goes either way, depending on how the so-called resources stack up. One of those resources everyone's always in a tizzy about is time, so if they think you are wasting their time, you automatically become the less valuable resource. If you can't work it out without HR intervention, they will, at least initially, view you with skepticism. If the problem goes away when you go away, it's a no-brainer.

Contacting HR should be the last resort before you are out the door. Nothing you say to them will be held in confidence. Your manager(s) will be in the loop. They work for the company, not you.

As, said several times here, HR is NOT your friend.

Is that even an HR thing? If sales are down, they won't need you as much. Can you find a second part time job?

I guess they're trying hard to make me quit. They just can't find a reason. They can't even write me up for anything bc I don't do anything wrong.

One guy invited me to his house, and I declined. He was never the same after that. And ever since would complain about any small thing about me to the manager. I guess when I'm not there all he does is run his mouth about me to the point that it seeped into the main manager's head. This is the guy I made thread about a while ago "dealing with a whack manager."

They do it on purpose so I get frustrated and quit. Right before the shift starts I get a call. This wouldn't happen and doesn't to others.

I couldn't even get an interview at multiple fast food joints. Always seeing new ppl working there.

My favourite was the Starbucks rejection. I called in multiple ones. One a girl said "OMG we are looking for gentlemen to work here bc it's all females." I didn't even get an interview.

To YOU finding a low wage job might be easy, but for whatever reason, not for me.

And yes I am at a giant company.

I feel like if I'm getting such low hours that I might as well quit, I might as well complain about anything and everything to HR.

Especially since it's retail. Like everyone is saying,hr is NOT your friend. People talk, period. It will trickle down who complained. They all have friends, buddies, etc. It all comes out in the wash. Complaints are never anonymous. I've seen it happen over and over again. Employee complains, suddenly their hours are cut, management treats them like garbage, and they're essentially forced to quit.

Right on. Some of the comments above crack me up though..

Having worked for a global corporation like I have for 23yrs, I know how it's "worked" for us in the environments I've worked in. If one individual complains to HR, every single employee in that dept, division, plant, etc. has to go through re-training in whichever realm the individual complained about.

A royal PITA. At the plant level, we generally know who lodged the complaint before any of this happens. Mercifully, It's only happened a couple of times.

Like said, HR is there to protect the company before the individual.

Must be a retail chain store because whenever I go into one of the jobber type stores, I always see the same guys working there for over 10 years. Must pay well. Unless you have some contract, I assume they can fire you at any time, no need for you to quit. They haven't yet so you have some value to the company. Know two guys who worked the parts counter at Advance. One went to a jobber store, the other to a Hyundai dealer parts department. That was over 5 years ago now and they are still there.

HR is never to be trusted for anything. They aren't on your side. Believe me, the last thing they want to do is what their perceived job is.

Manager wants cute chicks in customer facing positions. (reverse?) sexism but how do you prove that?

Auto Parts sales, HR will only care if someone's stealing from the company. Then they'll care A LOT.
