Now that the new Dexos 1 Gen 2 5W30 synthetic oils are out for GDI engines - what differences can we expect in D1 Gen 2 rated Castrol Edge , M1 , PP and Valvoline 5W30 synthetic oils ? ... Is there one you favor for any reason (other than price) ?
You're probably actually thinking about SN Plus which is one degree beyond D1G2. Once you pick an SN Plus oil, the rest is marketing, price and what your brother-in-law, or boutique oil salesman tells you. I'm a rebate fan so for me it's Pennzoil Platinum, and Quaker State Ultimate durability in 5w30 SN Plus. If we had Mobil rebates for SN Plus oil in Canada, I would probably include Mobil 1. If the rebates are used up I buy Valvoline Full Synthetic which Walmart Canada rolls back more often than Mobil. Use all with confidence!
Between SN Plus and d1G2, the dexos spec is the more stout.
As for differences? After seeing a few voa/uoa, I'd say [synthetic] oils have never been more alike than now. Brand preference, price and availability being my litmus.

Yep, Dexos1 Gen2 addresses timing chain wear but SN Plus doesn't.

So, "Dexos1 Gen2" and "SN Plus" on the same jug, protects timing chains and is the newest GDI/Turbo spec.

Dexos is General Motors cars only. It is not an industry spec it is a proprietary licensing spec by one automobile manufacturer only. They might be cutting corners somewhere if their cars do not run on industry-approved oil well enough to make it through the warranty period.
Most oil manufacturers who sell in the USA and Canada have embraced Dexos and their 0w20, 5w20 and 5w30 products are Dexos approved. Use it with confidence in all makes.

Some brands skip it for their 5W-20, which may or may not mean it couldn't pass the requirements. (Perhaps it could, but the oil manufacturer elects not to pay GM's licensing fee for that grade.)

Same for Porsche. Kendall at one time quit paying but the oil didn't change.
Small companies usually can't front the costs!

I would only worry about SN+ for grades like 10W30 that are not covered by dexos.
For 0/5W20/30, dexos1 Gen 2 is all I look for.
If I wanted to move up to 0/5W40, I would look for dexos2 (which I have yet to see at Walmart!).

* +1 for me as well : D1 Gen 2 synthetic oils from Walmart - in Hyndai I only have the D1 Gen 2 choice in 5W20 or 5W30 approved by Hyundai in my newer GDI non - turbo engine ... Last week PP , M1 and Castrol D1 Gen 2 oils were ALL on sale so I grabbed Castrol Edge 5W30 to try . Recently tried Pennzoil Platinum 5w30 D1 Gen 2 with good results up to 5,000 miles . At some point I'll pick one to get a used oil analysis done to see how they really perform .
As far as dexos 1 Gen 2 oils from the list provided, I have used Valvoline Advanced Full Synthetic and Mobil 1 5W30s. Also used Mobil 1 5W30 AP once when it was the only oil with a dexos 1 Gen 2 license at Walmart and there was a $10 Walmart gift card offer along with the XOM rebate.
The Valvoline PDS showed a NOACK loss of 9.3% and an HTHS of 3.2, which is arguably a little better than the HTHS of 3.1 that XOM advertises for Mobil 1 5W30 and the ~10% NOACK loss that I have seen reported in a couple places for it (although those losses could possibly apply to older formulations). The Mobil 1 is likely to have somewhat better cold start properties, though, so I prefer to use that in the winter (park outside on some really cold ski weekend nights)...Valvoline pretty much just says the 5W30 meets the extreme limit for 5WXX oils while Mobil 1 5W30 has consistently been shown to beat the CCS limit by about 30%. None of this probably really matters much, but I've gotta have some way to pick an oil when there isn't a clear price advantage!
Also have some Mobil 1 Advanced Fuel Economy 0w30 dexos 1 Gen 2 on hand to try sometime this winter.

Do we know of 10w30 SN+ add-packs changed similarly to the d1g2 viscosities? (More Mg, Mo, Ti, less Ca) I scoured the used oil analysis and VOA sections and couldn't find a single SN+ 10w30 (excluding M1 that has had a SN+ friendly add-pack for a while now).
