I recently read where Mobil 1 5W30 had a much higher wear rate (based on a standard SAE test) versus Valvoline and Pennzoil ... To be fair , these synthetic oils were not Dexos 1 Gen 2 rated , so would be curious how Mobil 1 5W30 D1 Gen 2 would stack up against the other big synthetic oil makers (I.e. Castrol , Pennzoil & Valvoline) also making D1 Gen 2 now ?

I recall that it was around the time of Hurricane Katrina, the Valvoline published results showing poor wear performance for Mobil 1 5w30. I think a little later. Castrol published something similar. It was during the API SM era.
We all wish we knew how current oils perfom relative to each other. You have to pay a lot of money to get that data. Last I looked, it was many thousands of dollars. I can't remember who that data can be purchased from. Tom NJ has stated who they are.

This discussion is 10 years in the making... Remember when people wouldn't use M1 because of high iron on used oil analysis and the sky was falling yet you have folks on here that have done tons of trouble free miles well past the junk points of most vehicles before, during and after that.
Use what you want but to call M1 a higher wearing oil when there is a mountain of evidence that contradicts that is nuts.

I've run Mobil 1 for more than 30 years in many, many vehicles, including ATV's and lawnmowers, and never had an issue. I've got all the data I need.
I wouldn't be surprised if those companies took advantage of post-Katrina Exxon Mobil and did that test on their oils that were lacking some additives or the right base oils. They wouldn't be the only ones that used Katrina to their own advantage.

I use Valvoline and I like it but their advertising hype money could have been better spent showing perhaps how much they had increased the wear protect in their oil.

There may have been some truth to that with the older Mobil formulations, SM for example. When Katrina knocked out their PAO production plant and Mobil was scrambling to meet demand, there seems to have been a problem with the formulation. Valvoline, then Castrol used this in their marketing. Valvoline said they had 4 times the wear protection of Mobil 1, and Castrol said they had 8 times the wear protection.
With the latest formulations of Mobil 1, I don't think there is any issue of wear protection. In fact, on Mobil 1's website, they talk about how their oils provide unsurpassed wear protection according to the Sequence IVA test.
