Colonial Pipeline stopping all operations due to cyberattack

I just read that we did pay the ransom or I should say the company paid a ransom not a good thing to encourage others.
But whatever I certainly don’t have all the answers.
Yeah I agree I never knew our system was so dependent I’m such a small net worth of pipelines
It is a judgement call. Sometimes you have no other choice but to stop the bleeding (say in my wife's workplace the data for cancer treatment of live patients are locked up, it would be unethical to let some of the patient die because we stopped some of the treatments and start over again). Sometimes it is just to save some money because it is about the easiest path and those would encourage more ransom / kidnapping.

We cannot just blanketly criticize others without having some skin in the game.

The truth is that nearly everyone pays the ransom as there is little choice. The data is encrypted and cannot be recovered.

You also cannot use backups since most attacks have also previously placed "bombs" or other corruptions in the backups to make them useless. Many of these types of attacks occur over a much longer period of time than just the final locking of data.

Stuff happens. Do you have any idea how many fuel pipelines cross America? There was also a fire that threatened to damage that same pipeline, so they shut it down. Let's not lose focus here, this is an attack on America, and should be responded to in kind.
Totally agree as this country should somehow hunt that group down and just eradicate them. The world has enough issues going on and 1 more just doesn't cut it. IMBHO likely a bunch of EV supporters trying to change the world.

While I agree, it's pretty tough to do when they are in a foreign country.

There's always other groups and you can never prevent them all.

The solution, is to have enough redundancy and fault tolerance. What if it is not a cyber attack but a natural disaster? What if it is a hurricane that broke the pipeline? What if some idiot drove into the pipeline drunk?

Of course, we all want just enough and never pay more than the lowest price, and nobody wants to build redundancy when they are not paid. We also don't want big government, so we have to suck it up once in a while or pay up a little more regularly (to build up redundancy).

Most pipelines are built underground. It makes it physically less vulnerable, but also makes it harder to repair.

I'm pretty sure that any kind of expansion wouldn't be used for redundancy, but to reduce the amount of fuel that would need to be transported by rail, truck, or water. I guess it's why build it if you're not going to use it.

What puzzles me is that for way over a decade it is well known that critical infrastructure like this should always been on a closed network completely disconnected from the internet.

I do NOT believe the official story.

Only if your data and binaries are combined in the same backup. If you only backup the data and re-install binaries from clean sources, you have a good chance this strategy will work.

You are sadly mistaken.

The world is in a sensitive state of mind, all I was trying to say is,keep your heads on straight, take care of your loved ones. Nothing more, nothing less.
Well, this is another disaster that I weathered simply by carrying on as normal. Hopefully, lessons were learned. 4 of my 5 sibs live within 90 minutes of each other. We met almost 'normal' for my 70th B'day. Best present was having 18 mo old grandboy on my lap and hand feeding him

I think there's another container in the laundry basket. Not sure why anyone needs the basket.

People amaze me every day anymore. First it was mask hysteria now it's getting gas before your neighborhood does, people are unbelievable.

Like I said a little dope slap for the unwashed masses. I just heard one fool having a press conference "see! that wouldn't effect those with electric cars".

How about those magic electric cars hooked up to the internet ?
They could be in trouble too.
