You're right, MG - hadn't taken into account the 'litre vs. quart' conversion. Thing that makes you six-pack price more likely what it is, is that the price 'Rick' quoted me was for a 12/1-litre case...see mt e-mail rwesponse I posted. CSK sells all its oil, including Havoline at PS, in quarts, not litres.

If I could get it in a six pack, I'd still, after all this, go for the CS syn...seen a lot of good UOA's from ALL of Chevron products.....

I contacted W.O. Stinson this morning to get the prices for 5W-30 Kendall GT-1 and Valvoline SynPower. Their reply:

The Kendall full synthetic 5W30 is $67.58 per case (12X1L)

Valvoline Synpower 5W30 is $52.66 per case (6X1L) which would be $105.32 for 12L

They can't match the Wally World SynPower price, but the Kendall looks like a decent deal. Pour point of -42C, 4250 cP @ -30, VI of 166 and a TBN of 8.1.

And I'm sure these are quart bottles as well, not litres.

G.

Kendall GT-1 Synthetic works out to $5.95 per litre once you do the conversions.

Their price on the SynPower is $9.28 a litre. Quarts of it at the GD CT are $7.99 and I believe five litres of it is under $30 at Wally World, so they are definitely on the really, really high side with the pricing for that.

Yeah, thats nuts pricing on Synpower! W-M all the way for that stuff....

Thanks for the info on the Kendall Syn - almost forgotten about that one. I once called Stinsons to see if I could their GT-1 10W-50 in Canada, and found out you can only get 10W-40 here...guy didn't even know they made a 10W-50!

Kendall Syn looks like a good product, but can't get the syn at the retial level - even Stinson gas stations ONLY sell the GT-1 syn blend...I think that's silly, make your product availiable!

PartSource has what appears to be Amsoil ASL 5W-30 and ASM 10W-30 in the flyer for $7.99 a quart, regular $9.99. I didn't realize that stores could get their hands on those products without being dealers. It might be XL-7500 and just incorrectly listed in flyer, although the pricing seems to be correct for ASL/ASM.

Wal-Mart has started updating their site at long last, and putting up more information as far as available oils and their prices. I think I am going to wait for some Platinum on sale, maybe, or just get some regular priced cheap GTX and do my 5W-20 experiment.

Canadian Tire, and its 'shadow store', PS, both sell ASL and ATM. Normally 9.99/quart, very ocassionally goes on sale. Good sale if you like that oil......

Quaker State Q Horsepower looks like it has good cold weather specs as well in the 5W-30 grade. 3980 in the CCS at -30, and it is on for $24.49 for 4.4 litres at Canadian Tire right now. That makes it $5.57 a litre, so a pretty good price.

Their regular price on it is $34.99, and Wal-Mart's is $32.98, 4.4 litres appears to be the biggest size it is sold in.

So, I bit the bullet and dropped into Stinson's today, and bought a case of 5W-30 Kendall GT-1 Full Synthetic. Sure enough, $67.58 for 12 quarts.

One curious fact however - on the back label of the bottle it states "Product of Korea. Blended and packaged in the USA." This is something new to me. I did some checking online and I'm assuming the base oil comes from either SK Corp. or S-Oil Corp. in South Korea. Does anyone know where ConocoPhillips gets their base stocks from? I thought most of them came from the Excel Paralube (?) refinery in Louisiana, but it seems they may import some.

Regardless, I'mlooking forward to trying it out.

G.

I believe that the Motorcraft base comes from Excel Paralube (Pennzoil helped develop the oil and it was a Pennzoil-Quaker State/Conoco joint venture plant that Shell had to sell its half of), and all other ConocoPhillips oils use Korean base stock. Conoco's Korean base is S-Oil.

The Excel Paralube plant also makes the base for Pennzoil Platinum, I believe. Quaker State's base comes from Korea.

South Korea between GS Caltex (Chevron and LG owned), SK Corporation and S-Oil produce over 45% of the world's group III bases in three facilities.

MG, you are an absolute fountain of lubricant knowledge

I learn much just reading your and Addy's posts, regardless of topic.
