In Amsterdam at the beautiful Okura hotel last week.

This monster Nespresso "zenius" took up half a corner and seems overkill for a hotel room.

The coffee is ok, it makes a decent cup, but I dont like the thought of aluminum in my coffee.

Wow, another format!! Crazy.

You can be assured very little Al makes it to your cup. I do worry about plastics more, frankly.

Same fufu coffee.

Ok, I look at my wife and I as bargain hunters in coffee beans. It wasnt always this way even two years ago but the coffee we buy has increased 100% since.
We used to be able to buy "Gold" Kanola Blend coffee 2 - 2LB bags for $30, then started going up buying direct and on Amazon. Now two bags is $57.95 ... no longer for us.

We have been on the hunt (and it's been fun) trying different lower (and on sale) coffee beans.
When we like one we buy a lot. A while back we liked Amazons Dark Roast but have become near impossible to buy recently. Again, we would buy 2 - 2 lb bags.

Anyway, we scored these two at Costco to try out. Both were on sale when purchased.
The " Kirkland Organic Whole Bean" was definitely more mild than the dark roasts we buy, I would say Medium is correct. Beans are brown and dry. I kind of liked it for a change, felt smooth enough, wife didnt like it at all. Which surprised me as I like my coffee dark and she complains sometimes *LOL*

Ok, on to the "Organic Cubano Roast" Powerful stuff, dark and smooth to us. Surprisingly my wife likes it and it brews a strong cup however she says it is a smooth strong. I am in shock because even though I like it, I brewed a strong pot this morning. I guess you could save more by using less coffee for something more medium if that is your preference.

Beans are "wet" and dark coming out of the bag. It's a keeper! On sale at Costco for the month of Sept 2025. It comes out to $8.75lb - 2 lb bags and is sold 2 - 2 lb bags = 4lbs in an online order.

The bag we got a couple weeks back are "use buy 8-28-26 so I am ordering another 8 Lbs when I finish this post which is 2 boxes. Each box contains 2 - 2lb bags. So my cost for Sept 2025 at Costco is 2 boxes (8lbs of coffee) for $69.98 (Cubano Roast)

Have had the Mayorga Cuba roast many times. It's good and the local Costco seems to always stock it. Still, the Kirkland Signature Colombian Supremo is the go-to, the House Blend is excellent.
I'm not buying the silly explanations for the price increases. It's money grabbing and nothing else.

Does anybody make their own cold brew? I've been trying to get into it because I like cold drinks more than hot but I can't seem to get my technique down right.

I use a 64oz mason jar with a long center metal strainer designed for the large jar to hold the course grounds but after 24 hours it still tastes very watered down. I'm wondering if putting the grounds directly into the jar and using cheese cloth to strain would be better.

I get good cold brew results with a Hario mizudashi. I grind very coarse using a 12:1 ratio and let it sit in the refrigerator for 20 to 24 hours. It's simple to use and there are many YT videos.

Been having Gloria Jean's Raspberry Chocolate Lava k-cups (got for my wife) and some Lavazza Perfetto k-cups on the weekends and Starbucks Italian Roast ground during the week.

Whatever dark roast the wife happens to buy brewed in a Melita pour over cone. Best $6 coffee maker you will find.

update -
Wife and I found our new go to. Previously posted, this is a keeper for our taste. Strong, dark but not bitter.
Will keep buying it as long as we can still buy it. We have been burned constantly over the years, we like a coffee but then either the price doubles or near triples or Costco stops carrying it. That was the case of "Gold Coffee" then bought direct and on Amazon until the price became to high for us. We searched ever since. This is the one.
Bought 8 pounds (2 cases) on sale at Costco, hoping it takes us to the next sale. Free ship from Costco, 2 bags to a case, 2 lbs in each bag = 4 Lbs per case. Oh and OMG, we have airtight containers to store beans, but you do not need them with this bag. It has the most amazing well made zip close. So we do use one of the containers that holds about 3/4 pound but no need to put the rest in a 2LB container, the bag has an amazing seal like no other.
